    Crab Id Needed

Thanks. Better an emerald than the black ones I get that I have to dispose of (no fuge). Do emeralds pose any risk as bad actors? Most people avoid crabs, but they are cool critters.

    Crab Id Needed

Brought this one home from the lfs on a piece of LR with shrooms I bought. I've gotten black ones before but never one that looked like this? Any idea what kind it is? Good or bad actor? (I know some folks think all crabs are bad). Thanks

    Red Sea Max Reef Tank

Hey - thanks for the comments. Yes, I figured I could probably do it cheaper by buying components. Then I might have a few bucks left to buy live rock & fish! I'll have to check on Deltec too - thanks for that information. Right now I'm looking at a lot of options and trying to learn a lot about...

    Red Sea Max Reef Tank

Hi. I've been strictly freshwater for many years, but I was considering the Red Sea Max as a way to get introduced into Marine aquaria, and it looks like the unit contains just about everything to get started. My problem is that I don't have much space left to set up another tank, and the size...

    When Shrimps Attack

Quite a lot of fish hover just over the substrate at night. My neons definitely do, as well as several others. Hard to imagine a shrimp getting one, but if you've seen it then I guess it can happen.

New Fish Die In My Tank

I agree 0 nitrates doesn't sound like it could be true. If you're using the API solution test (or any solution test) for nitrates check out this information from API that I posted a while back: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=180830&hl= You may have the same situation that I once...

    Feeding African Dwarf Frogs

Hi. I had 2 I bought a while ago and I couldn't keep them alive long - couldn't get them to eat, and couldn't get the food to them. At least you found a way to get yours to eat something! You might get a better response if you post in the Invertebrates, amphibians.... section of the forum -...

Stowaway Fry In My Fishless Cycle

I guess it just goes to show how life can sometimes still go on, even under really adverse conditions, Sometimes fish are a lot hardier than we think they are. If the eggs developed under those conditions, then it would seem the fry have adjusted to them.

    Seachem Matrix

Then I would think you should not let the ammonia get to zero till your nitrates go down to zero or close to it. I haven't done fishless cycling yet so maybe those who have can comment.

    Seachem Matrix

It's possible that replacing some of your bio media with fresh media could slow the cycle down till the media gets loaded up with bacteria. Keep an eye on the readings. It sounds like you're fishless cycling so I'm not sure I'd stop the ammonia adds just yet. What are your nitrite & nitrate...

    Seaclear 40 & 50 Gallon Acrylic Tanks

That's my feeling too, based on what little information I can get on these tanks. I'm thinking surely they can't be that much of a hassle to set up & maintain, or they wouldn't be selling them. I guess I'll wait & see if anyone owns one or has looked at one. I'll put them on my list to check out...

    Seaclear 40 & 50 Gallon Acrylic Tanks

Hi. Sorry for posting this a second time, but I may get a better response here than in the Equipment section. I've had another attack of "iwannanothernewtank" syndrome, and I was thinking about getting a 40 or 50 gallon SeaClear acrylic tank, but I have questions on the top cover of the Regular...

    Wild Bass Guarding Babies

Hi. I've seen it a few times. That's why some areas & lakes ban fishing during bass spawning season. They're too easy to catch while nesting - the adults will grab any lure or bait you put near the nest or school of fry - defending the eggs or young like cichlids do. Nice pictures! :good:

    Seaclear 40 & 50 Gallon Acrylic Tanks

Hi. I was thinking about getting a 40 or 50 gallon SeaClear acrylic tank, but I have questions on the top cover of the Regular and System II types. It sounds like the clear acrylic top of these tanks is bonded to the sides? I've seen a couple reviews at Petsmart and/or Petco that this bonded...

    Seachem Matrix

Definitely rinse the Matrix thoroughly. It will be a bit dusty and you don't need the fine dust floating in the tank for a while. Tank water would be best if it's an option, to try to innoculate the Matrix with some bacteria, but tap water is OK. It sounds like your filter is an established one...

    Where Does Bacteria Come From?

Boboboy: All I can say further on this is that if you're going to recommend something like adding soil to a tank to get it cycling, you should have some good evidence to back it up & you haven't given any. I made no recommendation to start all this going - you did, and I see no need to have to...

2 1/2 Gal. What To Do?

I've kept a couple each of neons & white clouds, and a cory, in a 3 gallon with a bio-wheel filter for a couple years with no problems or stress on the fish, and no disease problems. That might be considered overstocked by some, but the fish sure don't seem to mind! I've had to relocate the...

    Where Does Bacteria Come From?

Boboboy - I said I had no doubt that there are nitrifying bacteria in soil. I just stated that I don't believe they are the ones that we need in our tank, and that it's not as easy as just throwing some dirt in the tank to get a cycle going well. The link you sent gave no proof that soil has the...

    Cleaning Canister Filter

Probably too late, but as Scorphonic said you really should do it in tank water. Chlorine in the tap water may kill all of your good bacteria & throw you into a mini-cycle. When I clean my Eheim Ecco I do it while doing a water change and rinse out the media in a bucket of tank water. I use a...

    Cycling Diary

Just never add salt to a tank that already has zeolyte in the filter. Salt is used to recharge zeolytes (just like water softeners) and in the case of used zeolyte adding salt to the tank can cause the ammonia that has been removed by it to be released - not good. Adding fresh zeolyte to an...

I've had the bottle #2 plug up too - it's really an indication that the ingredient still has some clumps in it and needs more shaking to re-disperse it all. Which in that case means you may not be getting a totally reliable test result. It's kind of a pain in the a** - you would think they...

    Where Does Bacteria Come From?

I very highly doubt that soil bacteria are what we're after in our tanks. I have no doubt that there are nitrifying bacteria in soil, but there are different types of nitrifying bacteria, and we want the aquatic ones. You'd have to show me some good evidence of what you're saying on that one. If...
