Quite a lot of fish hover just over the substrate at night. My neons definitely do, as well as several others. Hard to imagine a shrimp getting one, but if you've seen it then I guess it can happen.

I guess it just goes to show how life can sometimes still go on, even under really adverse conditions, Sometimes fish are a lot hardier than we think they are. If the eggs developed under those conditions, then it would seem the fry have adjusted to them.

Then I would think you should not let the ammonia get to zero till your nitrates go down to zero or close to it. I haven't done fishless cycling yet so maybe those who have can comment.

Yes - ppm is the same as mg/L. 15ppm = 15 mg/L

It's possible that replacing some of your bio media with fresh media could slow the cycle down till the media gets loaded up with bacteria. Keep an eye on the readings. It sounds like you're fishless cycling so I'm not sure I'd stop the ammonia adds just yet. What are your nitrite & nitrate...

That's my feeling too, based on what little information I can get on these tanks. I'm thinking surely they can't be that much of a hassle to set up & maintain, or they wouldn't be selling them. Hi. I've seen it a few times. That's why some areas & lakes ban fishing during bass spawning season. They're too easy to catch while nesting - the adults will grab any lure or bait you put near the nest or school of fry - defending the eggs or young like cichlids do. Nice pictures! :good:

Definitely rinse the Matrix thoroughly. It will be a bit dusty and you don't need the fine dust floating in the tank for a while. Tank water would be best if it's an option, to try to innoculate the Matrix with some bacteria, but tap water is OK. It sounds like your filter is an established one...
