    Cardinal on the way out..

If you ever need to euthanize a fish, I really don't recommend the stress of putting them in a plastic bag and a good whack with a hammer. OUCH! I use frozen vodka in a cup and put the fish in the cup. He falls asleep within 5 seconds and it doesn't appear to be painful in any way. No sudden...

    HELP!!!

Unfortunately, the pleco will not like the salt. So, stray from that.... But the Amquel+ is a miracle-worker on nitrates and nitrites. Good luck!

    pH level

Is this something that just happened over night, or has it been slowly creeping up? If slowly, then I would guess that you use water that hasn't had the PH reduced when performing water changes right? If so, use some peat in your filter. It will help keep the PH down. Also, make sure to...

    water changes

Do you have a gravel cleaner? The self-starting ones are the best. I would just clean the gravel and make sure not to overfeed. Definitely do NOT clean the filter or parts as you need the bacteria that is growing on it. Let it get all gooky, it's good for the fish. When you use the gravel...

    HELP!!!

Is your PH normally that low? If not, you can use PH UP from your LFS. For immediate nitrate control you can use Amquel+ (make sure it has the +). That removes nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia. It works great when I have tank booboo's. Did he clean all the "good" bacteria out of the filter too...

    pH level

What PH do you normally keep your tank at? You can use PH Down from the LFS to lower the PH. To keep it low, you can use peat in your filtration system. HTH.

    molly just gave birth

BTW - you can use a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle to crush flakes. Works great for me. Then I feed my fry as much as they will eat in 5 minutes, 3x or more a day. They can eat 5 times if you let them. This is how I got mine really big, fast. I sell them to the LFS. HTH

    Deliberately overstocking & safety

Hello, I am deliberately overstocking my 15 gallon (long) tank with appx. 1 month-old molly fry. I would say there are a good 50-60 of them in there. I know that typically, overstocking isn't a GOOD IDEA. But, these are all fish I plan to sell to the LFS here in less than a month. I have 3 tank...

I could be wrong here... but I think your female and a male have mated at some point if she's pregnant ;) What exactly would you like help with? There are a lot of people here with molly rearing experience. Fire away!

    molly fry

Ok, so you have a 5 gallon and 20-30 fry. They should be fine in the 5 gallon only for a short period of time. Maybe a month if you are lucky. It depends on how fast they grow. You can tell when it starts to look way too full! :) At that point, make sure you have a 10 or 15 gallon tank set up...

What colour do you prefer most in a fish?

My favorites are the unique orange/yellow ones. I also like black. It goes well with my castle scene and white substrate!

    bought my first convicts!

Just so they don't fight over territory (one will have to be passive), make sure to have TWO caves. That way the loser still gets a place to stay. If they pair up, great :) Good luck!

    Question

If this tank is exclusively for your mollies you would have perfect settings right at 80 F (that is, if you are trying to breed). Most of my mollies come up to the top at times, but if your fish are staying at the top, something could be awry. What are your tank stats (Nitrites, Nitrates...

    Whirling fish disease

Ok, here's the information I have on this subject.... Whirling Disease Signs of infection Erratic swimming behaviour is one of the first signs of infection. Emaciation (starvation) may follow. The most characteristic symptom is a spreading pale area within the muscles beneath the dorsal fin...

WOO HOO! MY SWORDTAIL GAVE BIRTH

That's interesting. I have a female who seems to "hold back" some of the babies. Has it been 24 hours yet? Sometimes they can continue birthing through 48 hours! Glad I'm not a fish....

Too many fish and more on the way!

That's good to hear! I am doing the same thing. I set up various molly tanks and have a regular baby factory going on here. I just love watching the whole process, especially the birth and watching them grow. It tugs at my heart a tiny bit when I sell them to the LFS. They love the fish though...

    Internal Bleeding?

Can you explain a bit more about what you have in the tank as far as equipment? What kind of filter do you have? When was the last time you cleaned your gravel? When was the last water change and how much? How do you prepare your replacement water when you do water changes? How long have you...

    Molly Breeding

Not only will they mate, but my males don't ever seem to stop, even to take a breath!! I have many mollies that are very distinct. I try to have one of every type. I have several ballon mollies that are about to give birth. The only males in the tank are sailfin's and lyretail's. So, the answer...

    Coloration

I would like to know the answer to something similar in regards to Mollies. I have had batches of fry that look DRAMATICALLY different from the rest. Anyone know if a molly or guppy can have fry from 2+ dad's at a time?

what would be a good fry tank

I have several fry tanks based on the fry's current age. See my signature. You can keep them in a small tank like that, but not for long. How many fry do you think you have? I have a 15 gallon tank for my "older" fry and they are doing just wonderful. The fry in there are about 1 1/2 months old.
  27. S

    why do male guppies

You should see mine... they breed like rabbits. The males have a harem of 4-1 female-male ratio :) I don't think they EVER stop.... doinking :) Day and night!
  28. S

    Feeding Guppy fry

I find a good way to feed fry is to take a coffee grinder (old preferrably) and grind up some flakes and keep them in a separate jar just for babies. Put it on espresso grind :) Cheap AND easy!

molly look likes shes gonna drop agen

Some of my mollies seem to drop every few weeks, but I have a couple fancy ones that are huge and only drop every 6-8 weeks. Odd no? But I suppose it's just the difference in species and fish health and happiness.

when will i be able to tell the sex of my fry

Some of my mollies were born very mature and I could tell the sex within a couple weeks. Generally, though, I find that I can tell the sex when they reach an inch long. If they are still tiny, feed them small amounts, but often. Fry have a voracious appetite, and if fed properly, will grow fast...

VERY Pregnant Molly not giving birth! Help!

Thanks! I will just leave her in the PQT then. I just changed 10% of her water. The temperature is perfect. I also added a better "hiding spot" for her since she seems to want to hide. I will just be patient :) I can't help it, I love mollies!! Thanks!

VERY Pregnant Molly not giving birth! Help!

:( Hello... I have at least 4 brackish tanks dedicated to mollies and their fry (at different ages). My Platinum Lyretail molly has always given birth to large, healthy fry. My breeder mollies live in a 20 gallon tank. When they start to get rounded to the point that they are looking like a...

Are my BABY mollies pregnant already???

Hello Everyone, I am currently breeding Mollies (Sailfin's, Lyretail's, Albino's, etc. I have my tank information listed below. Why are my males fighting?

Ok, I just woke up and my Platinum Lyretail has one clamped pectoral fin on the right side. :/ It's an... orangish color at the base of the fin. It doesn't look otherwise damaged or "eaten". I'm not sure what to do... could that be caused by the other (bigger) male Orange Sailfin Molly...
