I've seen them for around £1.50 but i guess it depends how big they are when u get them...

I find them at WalMart for $1.50 and at Petco for $2.50.

African clawed frogs are usually $3.99-$4.99.

I bet your mate got a African Dwarf Frog. They usually go for $.99-2.50.

The clawed frog will get big and eat you small fish. The dwarf stays small and is usually good in a peaceful community tank.
