I recently helped my friend set up a 20g tank with guppies from my tank. It has been going for a month now, is fully cycled (used rocks from my established tank) and for the most part, doing well. None of my fish are ill.

There is one exception. One female was resting on the bottom of the tank and rapidly breathing. She did swim from time to time, but she was not in good health.

When you look closely at her abdomen it looks as if there might be some internal bleeding right around where her gravid spot ought to be.

No other fish exhibit any symptom of illness, bacterial or otherwise. She may have recently giving brth, in which case, it would have been her first batch of babies. Is it common for first time Mamas to have troubles resulting in injury?

I am not sure if the female is still alive, or has improved, butI'll see this evening.

Any ideas?

water still same quality...
The female is still alive, swims sometimes, hover on the bottom others. But her brother died today. He was a little bloated looking, but no signs of velvet, ich, dropsy...HELP. I don't want her to lose any more!

Can you explain a bit more about what you have in the tank as far as equipment?

What kind of filter do you have?
When was the last time you cleaned your gravel?
When was the last water change and how much?
How do you prepare your replacement water when you do water changes?
How long have you had the one that died and the female that is having issues?
Have you recently added anything to the tank?
What are your tank readings? (nitrates, nitrites, ammonia)

I hope I can be of assistance, but I need more information to really make an educated guess. Have you noticed anything else about her that looks "different" or behaviour that is different?

Good luck, I can't bear to watch fish die.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

The fish ended up with some fungus later on. A light dusting. ACtually, more likely not a true fungus. She is aok now.
