I've bought my first convicts today...
They are floating in the bag at the moment.
I see the female allready got a little beating on the way from the lfs :(
I hope they will get along when I free them into the tank.
The male is really big, I think 11-12cm... female is quite a bit smaller, but that's normal right?

I will try to post some pictures when the batteries of my digital cam are charged...

Any advice on how to take care of them?

if you want them to breed quicker, add a cave. be ready to find homes for the fry. how big of a tank do you have?

There's a big flowerpot laying on its side in the tank, hope that works as a cave?
Well, I just hope they will be friends, they don't have to be lovers... :p

they are in a 20g at the moment
I'm not going to add any other fish, so the two of them in that tank will work out okay I guess?

the male does chase the female at times, but sometimes they are together in a corner, so I guess he's not that aggresive towards her...

I think convicts are not really that common here. I paid 10euro for one, I think that's about 13dollar or something.
They don't have a common name here either, just the latin name (cichlasoma nigrofasciatum right?)

convict cichlid is the common name. They go for about $1-$2 here. Very common.

And congrats on the new fish  Can't wait to see the pics. I'd be willing to bet you will be up to your ears in fry in a month or 2!!!!! :hyper:

well, I wouldn't really mind, I'm sure the lfs over here will want the fry...

what could be the behaviour to look for when they are pairing off?

Just so they don't fight over territory (one will have to be passive), make sure to have TWO caves. That way the loser still gets a place to stay. If they pair up, great :) Good luck!

looks great. when i make up my mind on what i wanna do id like to have a similar set up for my favorite male :D
