    Questions about Molly/platy fry

Yay! I am so happy for you! What colors are they? You will be so surprised, I find my fish continue to color throughout 8-9 months!

One Platy nipping others - advice needed!

Hey! So nipping is very common in livebearers. I have all livebearers (mix of mollies and platys). I have two males in total and the platy and molly both chase each other every now and then. I know yours are females. SO- you can do this. Remove the aggressive fish from the tank for a couple of...

How can I add more fish without overstocking?

I agree with the people who responded. Overstocking really depends on how often you change your water when it comes to slim-bodied fish like livebearers and other fish. Of course, larger fish need more space and overstocking can be that the tank is actually too small for them. Slim-bodied fish...

    Questions about Molly/platy fry

Nope! I feed mine three times a day (sometimes four) with crushed bloodworms! Protein rich foods are the key to growing your babies. Feed them multiple times a day for accelerated growth.

    Good Stock

I recommend Petco! My Petco has been super helpful and their fish are always very healthy. Drive around your area and look at all the different pet stores. Some are better than others- I have several Petsmarts that suck and several that are awesome. I recommend Petsmart for buying fish products...

All my fish dying - at a complete loss

I definitely wouldn't use the testing strips. Invest in a Liquid Testing kit. It is much better and more reliable. Do that and reply to all of these with the numbers, then we can accurately judge. I genuinely think, based off the white cloudy water you have, that your nitrites/ammonia might be a...

All my fish dying - at a complete loss

I agree with the person who responded. Looking at your tank it looks like your tank is not fully cycled. The low ammonia is good but you shouldn't have any nitrites at all nor should it fluctuate too much. My tank used to look like that when it was cycling- you can either continue doing a fish...

New to fish! Blonde needing help!

I don't recommend a sorority. I tried one and it was terrible. But- fishkeeping is learn by doing. So do your own research and make that decision on your own! My recommendation is no. You can do a fish in or fish-less cycle. I did fish in and it worked out eventually but probably wasn't the...

Need some opinions on Female Betta tank

Hey guys! It was successful. The bettas are at the pet store, my male betta is in the 7g and everything is right again. Thank you guys for your help!

    Platy bullies, what to do?

Okay so can you tell me how many fish you have in total? ANd how often do you water change? I have a 11g and 7 livebearers and they are doing great. The red one would be left alone. He COULD turn on the gold one. The best chance you have is returning the most aggressive one. However, if you...

    Platy bullies, what to do?

Recommend getting more fish. It sounds like he is the weaker of the group and so the boys are taking advantage of it. I would get two or three more male platys. They should group together. However, if they don't return the main bully to your LFS.

Need some opinions on Female Betta tank

Yes it does have a heater. Their water stays at 78-79.

Need some opinions on Female Betta tank

Okay- I told my mom this and she said she won't take them back... I don't want them to cause any harm to each other because two of them have fraying tails from the biting. I thought because they were smaller fish they wouldn't need as much space. I was wrong, you live and you learn. The 7g...

Need some opinions on Female Betta tank

I have a betta sorority currently (4 females) and have been super stressed. I was thinking about removing them all and taking them back to the LFS. They just seem to never get along and there is always something wrong. I just don't know if they are worth keeping around with the stress they are...

My female platy is chasing the males???

Hmm, Colin will def have a better answer for this but your fish could have several different things wrong. My guesses: -Worms -Gill flukes -Stress -Pregnant -Old age -Too much food Not saying that is what is wrong, but those are my guesses!

    Playing with my fishies...

I do this with my mollies and platys! They take bites out of my fingers and swim in my cupped hand. It is the cutest thing.

    BREEDING BETTA

Wow you guys... thank you so much! I might begin this process soon. I started a betta sorority but it just isn't working out and its been several weeks. I think I will be taking them back... so the female he is familiar with is in that sorority. Should I just put her in my 3 gallon holding...

    BREEDING BETTA

How do you breed betta? Kevin, every time I clean his tank, creates a beautiful bubble nest. I think he is ready for some babies. I have a couple females I can pair him with but I don't know where to start.

What would you name my new betta?

Gideon????? I don't know that makes the most sense to me. You could also take a few names from The Lord of the Rings too.

    Pregnant Dalmatian molly

My platy had a white spot instead of a dark one!

Lethargic platy laying on the gravel - help

I usually don't recommend keeping a single gender. I know it is SO HUGE in the keeping of livebearers but I find it is easier to get rid of babies then to keep stress levels down when you have fish that like to dominate. I would recommend doing a 3:1 (female to male) ratio. If you don't want...

    Platy bullying

Oh yeah I understand. I hope I am not sounding rude lol- these are just my opinions.
  26. carligraceee

    Platy bullying

See I would debate the whole 15g not being big enough for mollies or just big enough for platys. I just don't believe that they produce as much as you guys think. My mollies are in a similar size tank with platys and they are thriving (every stocking calculator, even the AQAdvisor one says I am...

    Platy bullying

I know- I explained what the OP could do if they had a problem with that. My livebearers have given birth twice in the last few months... I think it depends on the fish. There are easy solutions to fry.
  28. carligraceee

    Platy bullying

Totally agree! I am biased to livebearers so I recommended her take back the tetras and getting more platys!
  29. carligraceee

All my platy fry dying the same way except one??? Is it me? Or is it the circle of life??

I have not! I am about to lose my last fry, so I am thinking that might be the problem. I didn't ask for babies so if they survive I will be so happy! I will look more into worming my livebearers (I have all livebearers a part from one oto).
  30. carligraceee

    Platy bullying

I understand what you are saying. I always recommend having a good ratio of 3:1, if you don't want fish, let them get eaten or take them to your LFS. I said I USED to refer to that rule- I no longer do that HOWEVER, I mentioned it only because it can give a decent baseline. And yes, stocking...

What is the personality of your Betta Splendens?

Kevin is very interesting- comes to the glass when I come up and he is always building bubble nests! He eats a lot and loves his houses. Katie, Gretchen, Regina, and Karen are my Babes Sorority. They are all very funny and love each other. Every time I come up to the glass, they think I will...

    Platy bullying

Stocking is all about how well you can take care of your fish. You have 8 fish and three shrimp in a 14g tank. That is more than a gallon of water per fish (which is something I used to use). I recommend using AQAdvisor's stocking website, it is AWESOME. Personally, if I was faced with this...

All my platy fry dying the same way except one??? Is it me? Or is it the circle of life??

That makes sense! Gosh I feel so bad... my fish is definitely pregnant again so I want to make sure what I was doing was good. Here is what I did: I removed the adults and hunted the babies (I did this as soon as I saw her belly decrease and her start swimming more). Once I had as many as the...

All my platy fry dying the same way except one??? Is it me? Or is it the circle of life??

Thank you! I use Seachem but I don't use the liquid test kits, I use the strips (I have saving up for the liquid one). What should I do to save my last fry? She is doing well now but I really want her to pull through...

All my platy fry dying the same way except one??? Is it me? Or is it the circle of life??

Yeah I knew this. I made the mistake of changing the filter cartridge awhile ago and restarted the entire thing. Could that be it? I have been doing 50% water changes once a week- the nitrites are pretty low now and I have some nitrates present too (20ppm). Is that the reason they are dying...

All my platy fry dying the same way except one??? Is it me? Or is it the circle of life??

Hey guys! If you see my other posts, you will see I have some platy fry. They are almost a month old and were growing like crazy! All of a sudden, two of them started thinning out in the tail area and having trouble swimming and coming up to eat. Then they died the next day. It didn't happen...
