Walmart sells a small pre-set heater for aquariums from 2 to 5 gallons. It's submersible, and only around $7. Also comes with a suction cup to stick onto the sides. Good luck. I've never heard of a wireless heater though...likely you will have to go the cord route.

It seems as though many hard-core breeders are strictly against substrates because 100% water changes can't be performed and they gather bacteria (the bad sort, since we turn our filters down)... Do you use a substrate? Discuss.

I don't find it to be any more difficult than a regular undivided tank. Just think of each tank like a mini tank, only the water is shared. Vacuum your gravel, change the water, clean your filter media with the old water, and add new aged-appropriate temperature new water...easy, easy, easy. :)

I went and bought an aquaclear surface skimmer...but I must just be an idiot, b/c I can't get the thing to work. It doesn't come with flipping instructions, only pictures...Augh!

I see. I've never had a marine tank, so didn't really know what the skimmers skimmed. I have activated carbon in the filter as is. It's an aquaclear 20 filter on a 10 gal. So, a surface skimmer just attaches to the intake on my filter? That makes sense. I'll have to go get one. Thank you! :)

I'm sorry, but you are, likely, wrong. Breeders don't keep their bettas in community tanks. They build divided drip systems, or have them in individual gallon size jars. I house 4 males to a divided 10 gallon tank. A single spawning can product 200 bettas, so this number is not outlandish at...

I don't look at it as supporting that poor care of your LFS, but rather like saving the little guys from it. Like Yuki said, they usually color up greatly once home and out of those little cups.

Your gravel shouldn't be making your water murky unless it wasn't properly rinsed, or allowed to settle.

You can put a substrate (gravel, sand, whatever) in the tank...the little guy would probably prefer it. Gravel is not used in breeding tanks, but all my other tanks have it. It helps hold the good bacteria that builds up over time. Are you buying an actual tank that has some sort of...
