Breeding My Discus

Well it was good to finally get back home, and back to some warm weather after weeks in the bitter cold of early winter in Washington DC.......Although as the saying goes "No such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!" .....Well I guess my clothing was inappropriate as I froze my butt off!

It was so good to see my fish again, and I was very pleasantly surprised at what a good job the girlfriend had done of keeping it all clean and tidy......Oh, I might even take her out for dinner(maybe!)

Now by all accounts while I was away, and my couple were back in the main tank, there had been some chest beating going on and testosterone was flying, as another man fish had tried to muscle in on my girl! Well I am sorry to say that I am in control of this arranged marriage, so that guy will need to find his action elsewhere.

I set up the breeding tank again today, using water taken from the main tank. Starting with that water allows me to shift my couple straight away. I will start with around 30% water changes twice a day tomorrow, and then up it to 50% twice a day shortly after. Give the fish a chance to get used to big water changes again, as while I was away my girlfriend only did a water change once a week, as she was busy at work(I really need better staff in my house!......is OK, she doesn't read this so I am safe

).

Well, I am amazed! Those fish have been in the breeding tank about 2 hours, and have now started to clean their breeding cone. They must have been desperate for some private time. It just shows how content they must be that I can drag them out of one tank, drop them in another and they just want to get straight to it.

Some serious nest cleaning and tail slapping going on today. I am fairly confident that they will lay a batch of eggs within the next 24 hours. I hope with them having had a month of celibacy, that girly has a big stash of eggs built up, and my dude fish has a full pair of man-berries. Maybe the break has done them good and they will be eager to get everything right this time around!

Oh lordy, man berries?

Bingo! Talk about getting all your parrots in a row.....how neat are those lines....if they were white she would get arrested for drug use. She wasn't happy when I put the guard on, gave me right evil stare. I only popped out for a couple of hours and they got to it while I wasn't here to watch. I added 5ml of Formalin to keep fungus at bay, and upped the air..........Time for a cold beer, Cheers

I was a little worried this morning, when I looked at the eggs, as they all looked like they were getting that opaque white colour, as if they were not fertilized........ However I think it was just the way the light was shining on them, mixed with my paranoia! Looking at them now(24 hours old) there are only 5 obvious duffs amid approximately 150 eggs. So I am slightly more optimistic now. Also compared to their earlier attempts, these eggs have been laid very tight together. If you check out the photos from the first time, those eggs were splattered all over, and I think man fish would have problems spreading his love butter over such a vast area, so they must be learning now........ less fumbling about under the sheets, and a bit more Mambo dancing skills on the sheets

I also think that they seem extra attentive to the eggs, so suspect they know they have a strong batch this time....... I hope.
