Breeding My Discus

Looks like the kids want to eat, but the folks want them to sit down at the table! ...... I seem to know that if the parents would just chill out it would all be ok, but I ain't a fish and how can I know more than they do? I have fry dashing about, and mum and dad chasing them around....... reminds me of my childhood!

thumbs up DTD!

well done and great thread.

Woke up this morning, expecting to see the little guys happily feeding off Mum and Dad, but am gutted......only 3 fry left in the tank, with the parents ignoring them

To say I am disappointed would be the understatement of the year. I really thought they were going to make it this time. Now away to have a kiddie sulk!!!!

Awwww no, after all that! So what happens now, do you try to save those 3 by removing the parents or do you just still see what happens?

There is no way of saving them, they have to be their parents, as they feed of the parents skin mucus. All I can do is try again. Not sure why they decided to eat the fry this time. Normally the parent fish eat the fry if they feel that the brood are not good enough. Only thing I can think of was maybe there were just a little to few fry.

I will let them spawn again, and see what happens. It is very time consuming and a big effort on my part too, so I feel a bit frustrated now. The parents are still relatively young fish also, so they need to learn a bit I guess.

Not giving up on them yet.

dang it... i was looking forward to the caption competition until i made it to the end of the thread :( sorry to hear that. whats the plan now? would be great to save the three... but it is possible?

hope things shape up for ya. Look at it this way... Theyve gotten better by leaps and bounds each time. They'll get it sooner than later! Do you think they'd try again soon??

you know what... im going to throw the caption in anyway... hopefully for a smile.

It sort of reminded me of my day. here goes...

kid: 'im hungry...'
dad: 'well what do you want'
kid: 'idk... what do we have'
dad: 'well do you have any idea what you want to eat?'
kid: 'weeellllll... what do we have'
dad: 'k, well how about chicken nuggets?'
kid: 'ok...'
mom: 'you gunna finish them'
kid: 'weelllll...'
dad: 'if i make them you finish them'
kid: 'weeelllll...'

and this is where the picture is taken... I'm the fish looking at the camera with the dumbfounded look.
hope this helped! :good:

I don't feel like I'll have any trouble getting them to spawn again very quickly, as I have that all worked out now. What I need to do is to try to get all the eggs to hatch. If I can get 100+ wrigglers then I will be in a better position. I am going to set up a peat filter today, to try and get the water as soft as possible. This should help with fertilization, and hopefully a larger volume of fry.

The female has already started to clean a spawning site again. Now I need to go find a big helping of patience!

OK..... I have dragged myself out of my sulk now! That was so frustrating, after so much work! It's like a full time job

I did notice that the fry were swimming to the black foam filter, as they are attracted to dark objects(that's how they find their parents), so that didn't help. I have removed the filter and borrowed the external filter from my planted nano tank. This has a glass poppy inlet, so the fry won't be attracted to it, and I also switched out the black heater for a chrome one. So now there is nothing dark in the tank. I have also put a liter of Torf Peat in the filter to get the water nice and soft, hopefully this will aide fertilization of the eggs.

OK...... 'Take 7' !!!
