Some type of algae is growing on my Java fern. Anyone know the name?

Your Java Fern looks good, The black spots are spores and the stingy thingy are roots from babies. The spores rarely turn into new plants in aquarium but the babies will.

The light trough the leaves shows that there is not much on them, that's good. The babies roots looks perfect.

Sadly... If healthy your java fern will turn into a Christmas tree of little babies and disappear under them.

The babies can be removed, But with time the main plant will die giving birth to new babies all the time... And I find that it fripps the leaves and the plant looks ragged. It's one of the hardest plant to prune without breaking anything.

Note: I have a brown thumb, all my gardening turns to...

I leave all the babies there, I put back in those who floated away. And hope that enough will come so it holds together.

And I noticed how the new ones are placing their leaves and understood that they are not meant to grow vertically.
