Zebra Pleco

i really want a zebra pleco but a little reluctant to pay around £200 for one does anyone know where to find some for less?

Zebra plecs should only be purchased by those intending to breed; there are plenty of other plecs that aren't endangered and cost less.

You can find them on ebay for less than £200. - typically £100-£120 for a 1" juvinile

Breeders sell them for less than that but normally in small groups to other like minded people (eg to breed)
You'll be hard pressed to find a breeder that will sell cheap to someone that only wants one zebra.

What setup do you have that the lone zebra would end up in?

You're right, right up until you think it's your desicsion. It isn't...it's the breeders and most aren't interested in just selling you just one as they're trying to promote others to breed them.

i know it isnt my decision but i didnt mean it like that i meant that if someone could get hold of one them it is up to them whether they breed or not, obviously you will have the people who will breed them and only sell to others knowing they are going to breed them to because that is what they believe is right and we do need people like that but cant see anything wrong with one in a community tank.

well I personally don't agree with that myself as don't think they're available enough yet for people to have just one in a tank.


However other than ebay, i'd also try aquarists classifieds as they regularly pop up on there.

people are not insinuating that you can or can not look after fish by all means go and buy a zebra plec but they go for alot of money as you know

people would rather sell them for people to breed them on to keep there numbers up as we dont know how long the ban will be or if it wil ever get lifted

As Russel has said whats the set up going to be like for the lone zebra as they like to be in groups
