You bring in pictures of your plants and they give you free samples of what they think might help. :)

There are no fish dead in the filters .

Ahh walmart, with their dwarf puffers stuck in the filters....poor fish

The staff actually know their fish by scientific name off the top of their heads. ( well done Shotgate Aquatics!)

When they give you a perminant 20% discount for buying 10 or more fish from the store.

Perminant meaning any time you come in no matter how many fish you buy.

10 being the minimum amount bought before you get the card that is.

Also giving us some FREE river shrimp because it was my birthday, even though it was the first time we'd ever been there...although we had just spent £200...

when once you have picked out all you fish that you want to buy (i was a newb) and they tell you that you can't buy most of them eg. an oscar in a 39gal community

The tanks are clean and have proper filtration and tank sizes for fish.

--When they constantly pester you to join the fish club to become "further enlightened" and the manager is already a prominent member.

--When the manager phones you immediately when something of your interest comes into shop.

--When they bring in request items (esp. plants, yay!) and have lots of selection

--When they differ you to another LFs with different specialty in light conversation. ie "Hey, have you checked out Unlimited in the next town? They specialize in high out-put lights and fixtures."

When they.....

Erm...people...lots of very "HELPFULL" stores here and Im sure that getting free stuff is important to you but for me a good LFS is one that provides its fish with adequate tankage/filtration/spacing/grouping/food while they are there. All the fish are properly quarrantined before being sold and they give you an adequate method for transporting the fish home.

It would appear that most of your priorities would lay with them knowing your name and giving you free stuff.

As for my local fish store the guy stays for 3 hours after closing to clean the tanks and check for broken items or fish that look ill. And gets in 2 hours before opening to make sure all the fish are fine and have developed no problems over night. He also regularly checks his stock items for defects and clearly labels any defects found and marks the price down accordingly, only selling it to people once he is sure they know of any problems.

In the 7 years I have known the owner of the store he has offered me many "free" items. All of which I have refused and paid for in full. Why? Because I know that the profit he makes from that will help to keep a GOOD store running and help to keep the fish he sells in tip top condition.

Anyone who accepts such free items may infact be taking that £2.00 or whatever it was away from a new tank the store was thinking of setting up to give their fish a better environment.

Remember: It is your store and you have to make sure you give as much support to it as you take. We all love free gifts but in the fish industry where money is tight and wages are low it is best for that money to go back into the store and keep those fish even better for next time you want some!

Harsh words? Possibly. But I am just trying to make sure people think about their actions. Because we all love fish and that is why we are here. Right?
