Wow, that makes most of us look really selfish now.
I don't think people were giving the impression that they just like the freebies at all. A lot of emphasis is on how well staff know what they're selling, and that they build up a good relationship with their customers.
You mentioned that it's not necessarily a good thing that staff give freebies/reductions because of the cost to them. Well, just think how likely that customer is to return and spend more money. The store will actually make money by thinking ahead. Offering discounts is a much-used way in any business of getting new customers into a shop or to return, then the experience and dedication of the staff will help develop a strong relationship between the customer and themselves, ensuring much repeat business.
And anyway, looking back at the previous posts almost everyone has mentioned a good "habit" as well as discounts or freebies.
