Hi, im soon going to be getting a 30 gallon aquarium, and would like these fish:

6 cherry barbs
6 neon tetras
1 male betta

im a beginer at this, so what would you choose in my situation?

any help would be great =]

Welcome to TFF. :)

The only problem I see with that stocking is the betta. Neons and barbs sometimes will nip the fins of other fish, and bettas get very very stressed when there fins are torn or nipped. I would not add the betta. Maybe try a pearl gourami instead? Also, make sure you read up on cycling if you haven't done so already, there's a pinned thread in this forum about fishless cycling. :)

ive already bought all the stuff i need to cycle (well i need the filter heater and possibly a new light, depending on the one i bought is good enough)
im gonna get the cherry barbs first, possibly the tetra's but i want 2 shoal of smaller fish, with 1 or 2 larger, eye catching fish aswell...
any ideas?

You could have a pearl gourami, or a trio (1 male, two females).
You could also do the same with dwarf gouramis.
You could have angelfish.

Also, you could have bigger numbers of schooling fish. At least ten, and you'd still have room for a 'centerpiece' assuming filtration and maintenance is adequate. :)

ah right i was told the angelfish would need much more room. the tank is a standard 3' * 1' * 15"
what would be the best way to get the shoal of cherry barbs, and as many other species as is allowed for my water volume?
the reason i dont want all small fish is that i feel it will make the tank look empty, and that nothing will really stand out.

i was looking at platys, but they breed like crazy ive been told, is there any way to stop this, as i dont want loads of them on my hands

For a centre piece get yourself some gourami's :)

My male betta shares a tank with 4 zebra danios, 5 neon tetra and a pitbull pleco.....and he's absaloubtly fine, at first i had to take 2 extra danios back to lfs for picking on the fighter, though given time not sure if they would have stopped, as the others were nosy, maybe a little nippy at first but now leave him well alone....the tetra don't go near him either and the pitbull plec is scared of everything....lol.

I was advised time and again against this set up.......just make sure you have a backup plan, like being able to section off part of your tank for the betta, or another tank for him, just incase either he is too aggressive to the other fish, or that they fin nip him!

I have heard cherry barbs make good betta friends....as apparently to white cloud mountain minnows....tetra are renowned fin nippers...but like i said...it all depends on fish personalities as mine are fine!, when i got my betta he was in lfs in a tank of platies and was fine with them, half the reason i got him, cos i knew he could stand up to more bustling fish :)

just do your research, remember no long finned fish that the betta may mistake for other bettas....like mollies....apparently gourami are a bad idea as both bettas and gouramis are antabanoids and are territorial, because i was planning on getting a gourami to but decided i didn't want to add a possible problem, people in the betta forum also advise against angelfish as they can be aggressive too.....however swordtails can also make good tank mates for bettas, though i have no experience of that.

good luck!!! :good:

Dont forget, just because its working now doesnt mean you wont wake up with a destroyed fish ;) each to there own but if you cana void problems, best to do so.

If you like platys just go for males. I have 4 males in my community tank and they're fine :D

RE bettas in communities, there's also the fact that male bettas can attack other fish as well as being a target. I've had many and now keep them in their own tanks with snails for company.

hmmm i might go for some platys then

how about 6 cherry barbs, 6 neon tetras, 2 platys

what else could i put in the tank?

ah right... argh im really stuck here!
i wouldnt want 5 platys as i know id have no more room for anything else, and im trying ot have a varied variety of fish in the tank.

shrimp seem pretty kool, would they be a good addition

so so far im back to my 6 cherrys and 6 neons.

edit: actually i wouldnt want shrimp untill i figure out the fish that i want.

im sure most of you have started out with 2 small shoals like this, so what did you add next?
