No, it's not Walmart this time.
This weekend I was in Dallas for the betta show and my friend and I stopped by the Irving Mall. There was a little booth in the middle of the mall called Wild Zoo, and you wouldn't BELIEVE the conditions at that place. It sold iguanas, hermit crabs, goldfish and bettas. The conditions for the iguanas weren't ideal, but the fish.... oh God, the poor fish. There was one 15-ish gallon tank with about 12 common goldfish in it, and pairs of goldfish were being sold in one gallon critter keepers. There were bettas as well, in half gallon critter keepers, which wouldn't seem so bad except that they were in about an inch of water... filthy brown water. They couldn't even stretch their fins out all the way because the water was so shallow, and it was literally so dirty that it was difficult to see the fish in there. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to imagine animals being kept and sold in these in my wildest of dreams. I would have taken photos just to prove how horrific it really was if the booth owner hadn't been standing right there. I would have said something to him about how he was keeping his animals, but I know it wouldn't have made a difference... anyone who keeps them like that isn't ignorant of the fact that what they're doing is wrong, they're just too heartless to care.

Please, BettaMomma, I'm begging you to call the mall and complain about this. It was just absolutely disgusting and I'm afraid I'll have a freakout if I try to call right now. Here's the number I found on the internet... anyone else who would like to call, feel free. I'll try to work up the courage too in a couple of days, because I am absolutely irate at what I've seen :<
Irving Mall: 972-255-0571
Again, the name of the booth is Wild Zoo

Hmm...very interesting. I may have to go up there and rescue a betta or two. I wonder if I could get up the nerve to complain...maybe it would be a good place to start since I don't go in there all the time. I'll definitely have to check it out. Thanks, synirr.

I think BM's still on vacation. Try PMing her the number so you can be sure she gets it.

Will do. I'll just PM her a link to the thread so she can read about it...

well good luck trying to pm her now  Her box is full...

Yeah I've seen something like that once. There were like 4 bettas, each in a seperate 32 oz? containers, with 2 inch of brown water. Guess what happened to the betta? All shriveled, no eyes, no scales, some had just bones. It looked as if they were there for months without food or water changes.

its sounds awful, but if u need a wrong to be righted, BM can do it, shes brilliant, i guess thats why her box is full :D

btw, where did she go on vacation?

Hi. I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
And I've already been up to lots of things this morning.
I logged on, and something told me to click on this thread first. I did, I got irate, and then boy did I get to work. I looked up numbers for the SPCA and the Humane Society of Dallas, and called them both - along with the mall management office. I'd have called the store directly, but didn't want to, just yet. It will become clear further down why I didn't. YET.

I filed a complaint report against Wild Zoo w/both places (SPCA and H.S.) - and it wasn't the first time he'd been reported. Apparently the H.S. had gone out there a few weeks ago and he barely passed their inspection. An investigator from the SPCA will be making a visit to his location within 24 hours and I will be getting a written report mailed to me. I will share what I get back from you all as soon as I hear back. The reason I didn't call the store and chew the owner's ear off is because I didn't want him to suspect that he's going to be getting a surprise visit from the SPCA rep within the next day - and I didn't want him to clean up his act temporarily so when they show up it *appears* as if he's doing things the right way.

On a totally separate note, I'm about to open up a new topic on some VERY EXCITING news I found out this morning regarding bettas. I'll be back in a bit to post a link to that thread. I'm SO excited about it I can hardly stand it!!!

Here's the thread where the super exciting info is:

HA HA! :D

that is just stupid if you have a half gallon critter keeper why not fill it up so the fish has a half gallon are they really that stupid

some people :/

Thats awful. You go bettamomma, I'd be phoning around with you but I'm in the UK, 13 and have a bit of a lisp... Ah well. On a side note though, we're off to pets at home later, and I'm keeping an eye out for their bettas. They keep them with the tetras mainly, and in the fairly cramped condiotions they get nipped a bit. Well, quite a lot sometimes. So if any need me, I doubt I'll pass it up :)

Woohoo!! You go, BettaMomma!! Hopefully that guy will get his arse handed to him :flex:

I hope so too!!!
In NOTHING else, take comfort in the fact that he will get it handed to him directly when I call him personally tomorrow. :D
