The reason 2012 is mentioned so often is because the calendar created by the Mayans ends in 2012. Why some people have so much faith in the Mayans being able to predict the future when they couldn't even predict their own downfall, which was much nearer to them, is beyond me.
So no, we're not all going to die in 2012.
they saw their down fall. (dwindling wood stocks, during a drought) they just refused to do anything about it. much as the Easter islanders did.
the reference to 2012, relates to the Mayan astronomers. they had great knowledge of the solar systems workings. this made them confident that the planets of the solar system would come into alignment, towards the end of 2012. truth is this has happened, every 5200 years, since the planets were formed. none, of these 'alignments' correlate to any mass extinction events. (quite how they know that i dont know. we work in millions of years looking a long way back, so 5200 years is hard to pin down) logic states that it has happened 384+ time's in the, roughly, 2000000 years tenior of the hominid. last time i looked, we were still hear.
now the disaster scenario comes from the inception of the Mayan culture. 5200 years ago a great disaster befell the people who were to become the Maya. this correlated with the planetary alignment. so, the alignment coincided, caused(?) the extinction of one culture, and the formation of the maya. in essence the
Maya were born of disaster. to a simple, though intelligent, people. logic dictated that at the end of the cycle, everything would end in disaster. that is, of course, how everything started.
even if we do go extinct, it will be all the better for the planet. I'm with Doresy, we think far too much of ourselves. we are, utterly, unimportant.
