Will This Be Suitable For My Tank?

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, and sorry if this is a silly question but id rather ask than spend ££ and look like a prat.

Basically when i got my fish tank, the lighting in the hood is VERY poor, i think its a 12w for a 120l tank. I plan to replace the hood for a t5 lighting system, but was wondering if this would be alright.

Although i have a feeling that one is slightly to small therefore could this also be suitable?

My tank is 30.5 inches in length, which is (78-79 cm's). The height is just under 18inches (46.5 cm's) and the width is 10.5 inches (28 cm's)


Sorry to sound newbish, but like i said i don't really want to buy it only for it not 2 fit (well bad fit anyway)

What fish do you have - bear in mind that many fish like to jump - and this would not be a "lid" to the tank.

..they look a bit overpowered to me...

Any other suggestions of lighting? Ber in mind i need an upgrade of some sort. I understand it wont be a "lid" more of an overhead. But my plants struggle with only 12w.

How about converting your current lid.

Getting a unit like this would allow you to remove the current lamps and electronics from your lid. Replace them with these or similar to improve the lighting that you can use.

Does your current lamp have a reflector behind it? This would instantly increase the lighting output.

Yes the current lamp has a reflector behind it. How do they work though? I mean how do you install them? im rather poor at fish tanks DIY

They are suprisingly easy to install as long as you can remove the old kit.

Have a good think about whether you'd like to put new life into the old cover - and then take a peek at the DIY section of the forum. Im sure someone in there will be able to help. Would help if you can take a photo of the hood. (from underneath).

The electronics are simply a converter to change mains electricity to the correct voltage etc for a specific tube. i.e. If you have a 30W tube then get a 30W converter. Put the 2 "ends" from the converter onto either end of the tube, fix it securely in position with a reflector behind.

As I say - pop into the DIY section. good luk!
