Wild Red Spotted Peru Angelfish Tank

i might have spoken too soon about the cardinals health. i may have introduced whitespot to my tank

the fish are still eating and acting normal but ive noticed a few spots on a few of them.... looks like a trip to an lfs tomorrow to get some treatment just incase.

ill be so annoyed if i have it as ive never had it. i normally quarentine my fish before adding them into their main tank too but ive sold all my other tanks and dont have room for a quarentine tank anymore. typical i know but if it does happen to be whitespot then im only to blame.

Unlucky mate. Great job you kept the Angels away. Hope your plec is ok.

What you planning on dosing / doing to rid it?

still not 100% that i have it yet... a few cardinals do have a white spot or 2 but its not got any worse today. for now im gonna do a few extra water changes and see how it goes.

ive been and bought a bottle of interpet anti whitespot on my way home from work today. this is all they had so i hope its decent stuff it it appears i do have it

I used that one last time / only time and raised the temp to 30 and it worked well. I had no deaths anyway and everyone recovered.

I second the above. Had a whole tank infected and that plus the temp raise cured it with no deaths.

Really looking forward to seeing pics of this!

none of the plecs seem to have spots and the cardinals seem to have lost them bar a few..... strange

maybe it wasnt whitespot, but if it isnt then ive no idea what it is/was

still no more spots which is great news, but.......

i am down about 15 cardinals! there are no dead bodies in the tank so im guessing they have fallen victim to FX5 disease and are probably lying in the bottom of the filters

ill wait until the remaining cardinals have grown a bit then add a few more bigger size cardinals to bump the numbers back up.

ive also been thinking of getting a small group of about 10-12 bigger bodied tetra to add a bit of variety and more colour to the tank. ive been thinking of lemon tetras but not decided yet. i guess ill have a look at whats about and decide then.

as for bottom dwellers i think it will be corys of some kind. again depending on whats available but i would love a group of green/gold stripes again or maybe adolfi or similar, something a bit different to bronze, peppered and sterbai etc. maybe even brochis which i know are available at an lfs.

i am also loving the L200 ive got and may add a second to the tank in time.

nothing else really to add at the minute. i just hope the cardinals stay away from the intakes unless i can find something to cover them with :grr:

having an absolute nightmare with this new set up

im now down to about 21 cardinals due to their size as they keep getting sucked up  ive also lost one of the bulldog plecs which i found this morning and ive not seen the L200 eat yet!

its really getting to me now and im almost regreting selling the ornatums, colombians and rainbow cichlids to start a new theme.

on a good note though non of the fish seem to have any spots anymore so ive no idea what that was  and water stats are fine still.

i think im going to head off to a few lfs today and see if they have any large cardinals or an alternative to try and cheer me up a bit.....

after a trip to a decent lfs today i have returned with 15 x bigger cardinal tetras and 10 x rosy tetras.

this now bumps me up to 36 cardinals in total i think.....

stocking is as follows -

36 x cardinal tetra
10 x rosy tetra
2 x bulldog plec
1 x L200 green phantom

i have also squeezed some filter sponge into the intakes on the FX5's so hopefully no more sucked up cardinals :good:

went and seen an old friend at a not so lfs and came home with this windelov fern thats attached to bogwood and theres a sucker to stick it to the glass :good:

got a good deal too :hey:

The tank looks nice :good:

Unlucky on the Cardinals, but at least you have solved the filter problem.

Have you tried the dried egg white trick for your L200? I normally mix egg white, prima, broken algae wafers and finely chopped prawn, then spread it thinly over a rock and let it dry fully. Then put it in the tank. My plecs jump on it like a sailer would a woman after a long voyage

Oh and that fern must be pretty huge as it even looks big in your tank!!!

i am pretty unexperienced with plecs to be honest.... ive had a common, super red bristlenose, L333 and an L190 but all have come out and taken pellets etc so nothing too demanding.
the L200 however doesnt seem to eat anything i place in the tank to my knowledge. i might try the mix you mention :good:

the fern is huge, my tank is 2ft tall and its only a few inches from the top and bottom. its been in a tank in the lfs for about 6 months and started off as the normal fern on wood purchase. its obviously grown no end but still had the same price tag on from when it was a tiny plant and with a bit of friendly discount i couldnt resist it. im still not 100% sure if it would look better more central though but as its on a sucker it can be moved with ease :good:

ive been looking for a bit of gnarly redmoor wood to go infront of the fern just to finish the wood off. gonna add a few nicer rocks and a few pebbles scattered about then get some anubus and smaller plants to put inbetween the wood/rocks etc. i wont be adding ferts or anything so whatever takes to my water works and wont doesnt, doesnt.

the foam has worked a treat in the strainers of the FX5's but they are now sounding a bit air ridden at times and flow has been reduced but nothing to worry about.

just need the smaller cardinals to hurry up and grow so i can add the angels that are currently in with my rays. ive found a spotted gar for sale locally that i want in the ray tank and cant risk it with the angels......

loving it already!
thanks mate i really hope this works out. the palnts have really given the tank some colour and life.

the tank has very much started to come alive now with the addition of the new tetras and a few plants :)

i think im going to keep an eye out for a small group of flagtail porthole catfish and im tempted to add a couple of bolivian rams.

if the L200 seems to be ok then i may add a second, time will tell i guess.

ill also be adding some more plants and maybe another piece of gnarly wood :good:
