wierdest fish?

I'd be suprised if anyone had seen the fish in the picture above in a fish store, that is a Atlantic wolf fish (Anarhichas lupus) a cold water marine fish found in deep costal waters of the Atlantic ocean. The wolf fish people have seen in fish stores are most likely Hoplias malabaricus which is a predatory Characin from the Amazon basin, they still have teeth but are a long way from having jaws to match those of the marine wolf fish.

yeah thats what i was referring to. hoplias still have some pretty big teeth though

Well, this fish is definetely the weirdest ive ever heard of... Its the Pearl Fish, It lives inside the Anus of the Sea Cucumber!

However the reason that the Candiru is most feared by humans is because it is the only vertebrate known to parasitize humans! The fish is said to be addicted to the taste and smell of human urine. Candirus parasitize humans, when they are skinny-dipping while urinating in the water. The candiru tastes the urine stream and follows it back to the human. It then swims up the anus and lodges itself somewhere in the urinary tract with its spines. Blood is drawn, and the candiru gorges itself on the blood and body tissue, its body sometimes expanding due to the amount of blood consumed.

Last time I checked, and after working in the medical field for a few years, I have never seen urine expelled from the human anus, maybe I am wrong, but.............

it says that the fish follows the urine back to the human. then after it finds you it can go anywhere it wants. thats how i interpreted it. but trust me they can definately parisitize humans. i hope i never find out

The weirdest fish that I have ever kept and bred is the cuckoo catfish. Scientifis name is Synodontis multipunctatus. These catfish have the strangest spawning behavior. They will wait for another fish, a mouthbrooder to spawn. As the mouthbrooder female lays her eggs and the male fertalizes them the pair of cuckoo catfish will eat and then lay their own eggs on the spot. The female wouthbrooder then picks up the cuckoo catfish eggs thinking them as her own. The mouthbrooder then incubates her own eggs as well as the parasitic eggs of the cuckoo catfish. The cuckoo catfish eggs will hatch before the host mouthbroodereggs hatch. Leaving eggs and smaller fry for the cuckoo catfish fry as their 1st meal. Towards the end the host fish mouth is full of cuckoo catfish fry and none of her own fry :/

Good call for the cuckoo catfish being a weird fish. Did they actually spawn this way in your aquarium?

Cheers,
Luke.

Thank you for your comment Luke. The group of cuckoo catfish have spawned several times with a group of Malawan cichlids. I used Astatotilapia callipterus as the host fish. Callipterus take to incubating cuckoo catfish eggs very well. They are also not very aggressive so the cuckoo catfish pair can get close to lay their own eggs with the callipterus eggs.

What about a cow fish? they're square with horns. only ever seen them once in a marine aquarium, not very pretty at all.

I imagine the candiru is attracted to urine because some of the waste products in it are similar to those expelled from the gills of fish (its normal hosts)?

Yes that is right. Urea (a substance in urine) is also expelled from the gills of fish. I've seen a film of an oscar being placed into a tank of these things and within seconds it is infested with them. In the human cases I've heard about the fish is atracted to the urine and swims up the urinary tract in the penis. It can be removed surgically after that but I imagine it would be very painful.
