Why Do People Feel The Need!

Well Hackers, Viruses blah blah are probably made for the majority which is IE, so yes probably

Also, theres much less bugs.

Scientific names do change, yes- but at least you still know what fish is being talked about. It's not as if once something is reclassified its former name is gone forever- wheras common names change on a daily basis. For a very common example, a bag if kuhli loaches would contain at least three species all sold under the same name- not much bother normally but if you're doing breeding trials it's a pain.

Dwarf - it was not a dig honestly, but it was the first thing i had come accross that day and it had been bugging me a lot. i agree after i googled what you were talking about with what you had really no common name, i generally mean for fish that have a basic simple name that everybody knows like mollie, guppy ect. i apoligise for using your information without taking in all the facts.
I have not though ignored any comments and take it all on board. but as you say i do owe you an apoligy as i should have found a true example.

cheers spud

That's fine, apology accepted, genuine mistake, can happen to anyone :D . Actually, I haven't noticed many people using poecilia reticulata when they mean a plain everyday guppy. When people do use the Latin names on this forum it is usually for a good reason, like the ones listed by other posters: different common names in different parts of the world (remember we're an international forum), same common name used for different fish (someone who orders a mosquitofish expecting a timid tiny specimen could be in for a nasty shock), different common names used for the same fish.

Are you serious!? I would hate to live with you or anywhere near you if that's the kind of stuff that bugs you. Grow up! It needs to be done for cichlids and many other kinds of fish considering the common names are generalizations and can be used for more than one fish... example being the word "zebra" being used with any color in front of it...

The name for the Common Pleco, Liposarcus Pardalis, has definitely changed. I was told on a specialised forum. I was even told how to pronounce the new name (still can't though, it's just too long a word). :)

I think it is fine using latin names to ifdentify a species exactly. I do the same with parrots. Personally I find it annoying when I am expected to 'dumb down' simplybecause someone doesn't understand what I'm talking about.
I don't find it a massive problem doing a google on a latin name. It simply means that I have learned something.
see my sig'.

I agree with previous poster; made me smile!

What we've been trying to say is that this name hasn't changed, just that there are several different latin names (all different plecs) that are called common plecs.

The latin name won't change at all unless they discover that they've put the fish in the wrong species, in which case they might rename it, but there are several common plecs available. Thats why it's so difficult to say what a common plec's full size will be, because it would depend on which one it was.

Correct me if I'm wrong plec experts. I don't mind holding my hands up if this isn't the case

Sometimes a Latin name may change, for instance if they discover that it was not the first scientific name assigned, or that it does not belong in the family to which it has been assigned- if you find that a peckoltia for instance is actually a panaque. As the first part of the name is designed to group a fish with its closest relatives, that is naturally going to have to change if you discover that these weren't the ones you thought they were. And sometimes you find that two fish that have been given different scientific names are actually different populations of the same species- so they have to be lumped together under the same scientific name. Or, as has recently happened to the endler, that a fish that you thought was a subgroup of one species was actually a new species in its own right. But at least there will only be one scientific name that is correct at any one time. Unlike common names, where anyone can make up their own.

Think taht says I was right - not sure. but thanks anyway for clearing it up cos I'm not too knowledgable on the subject (of fish i mean, lol)

I'm partial to scientific names in most cases but usually use common names when I can. For instance, I wouldn't call a Cardinal Tetra a Paracheirodon axelrodi. (Partly because I would probably spell it incorrectly ;) ) There are however many instances where scientific names are preferred, like when talking about Corydoras, Apistogramma, and most African Cichlids.

There lots of instances where common names cause confusion. The 3 or 4 different species commonly referred to as Rummynose tetras for example. Using scientific names makes it clear which one you are talking about. I realize it can be confusing for those new to the hobby but it is an opportunity to learn.
