I've always used a python, my dad's had it (Same one) since before I was born
yes D, but you're not all that old! :p

i'm contemplating a python, but i'm not sure where i'd store it between changes. besides, a 5g bucket has so many additional uses! quarantine, drip acclimation, planting station, emergency poker table...

edited for plurality issues; i've been having trouble with that all day.

python users really love their pythons! I haven't used one. My vacuum syphon into a bucket method works ok for me.

How about keeping the python in the 5 gal bucket? Or I leave mine rolled up under my bed. No one said just because you have a python means you should get rid of your bucket. I think there are definately times to use a plain old syophon. Like if you are using tank water in a quarentine tank.

I don't use either. I have a siphon that I have modified with a long piece of hose, it is long enough to either a) run the water outside to the garden, or B) to my laundry room sink. I have a hose attached to my laundry room sink that reaches every tank in the house. I use that to fill the tanks back up, after adding dechlorinator of course.

We were considering making our own python, using the attachment that comes with a water bed. My mom used to have one, I am sure it is still kicking around. Hmmmm, I'll have to ask her next time I am over there.

Ca the python only be used on mixer taps ? I have looked at the python website and its abit unclear, love the idea of the convenience. Would it fit a mixer tap like the one i have below-

I'm not familiar with the exact one you have, but my guess is yes, it will. The python can hook up to atleast three different sizes. What you do is unscrew the cover on the tap (the VERY bottom part with a screen on it), and screw on the python. based on the picture, i think you would use the middle one, or the smallest female adapter, or the smallest one that you screw something into. If your LFS or LPS has one, you could always buy it and if it doesn't work, return it. I found mine at a chain store.

I tried to get pictures of the different adapters, but an injury kept me from unscrewing two of the pieces. Sorry :/

Would you care to enlighten us ? ;)

Hi

At present I use both methods. I use a hose to siphon water out of the tank, on to the grass. I was using the bucket method to put the new water into the tank, this is a big job as I have a 67 US gal tank. After reading the above posts I decided to investigate the python. I live in Aust and after checking out the lfs tonight I found that they had the same sort of thing. There was one with the tubing included and another with just the valve bit. These cost about $40 for the whole thing and $16 for the valve one.

I then went and looked in the hardware and picked up a connector that will go on my laundry tap and then a complete garden hose that will connect to it for $7.

*** NB these prices are Aust $

I have my tank in our family room which is downstairs so I am going to use the tank filter return to pump the water out via the garden hose and then hook up the other new hose up to add the clean water.

Here's hoping that it works I am going to try it out for the first time on the weekend when I do the next water change.

I've only used a bucket. Although I think if I ever tried the python I bet I would never go back unless working on a small tank. Kind of like now that I have high-speed, I never could go back to dial-up. :D

i keep my python in a 5 gallon bucket! all in one tank cleaning shop!

so u can just add the dechlorinator in the tank before you fill it back up? I always thought that with the python u still had to use the buckets to mix the dechlorinator with the water before throwing it back into the tank.

no space!! the current apartment is severly lacking in storage space and i keep my bucket under my bathroom sink such that the u-bend of the drain fits down in it. between the u-bend, my nets, dechlorinator and the assorted vinyl tubing, i don't see anywhere for a 25 foot python to fit! and i'd need one that big to reach ANY of the taps.

Yep ive been using the python with a 12 meter extention (lol) for a few months now and its the best investment you can ever make.
