I just started a 20g tank with 20lbs of live rock.

It's been cycling for about a month now.

There's some nice dark reds and brown algae growing now but some areas have a a white colour to them.

The white colour isn't hairy or anything. It just appears as if the live rock surface was bleached.

Why would this happen?

Your tank has just completed a cycle and this means that some creatures and algae in your tank will have died off. The rich colour on liverock is made up of coraline algae and i feel that its partly a coraline algae die off that has caused the colouration to turn white.

Do not worry, this is part of the natural cycle process and once the tank is settled in it will soon regrow over this area.
