we only over cycled one tank - from then on we aged the filter media in existing tank and moved it when we set the new tanks up :)

so if I run her filter in my tank will everything be cycled when I move it ? how long should I 'age' the filter for ? :dunno:

ah i wouldn't advise that here though as your experience was probably just a one-off, neons are notorious for being fragile fish that die at the slightest sign of ammonia or nitrites...

When I set up the tank, I went to a fish store and said 'what do I do next?" I'm big on research, so I spent alot of time on the internet figureing out what to do. He told me that i sould get 4 or 5 danios and let them in the tank for a few weeks, changing the water every week, and then very slowly add a few fish at a time. It worked for me, and I never had any fish die during that time.

I have never used fish to cycle my tanks, but I know I cant kill Platies even if i try, so I guess they would be a good option if one were to do that.

I have found by mistake though that neon tetras are excelent for cycling!
I know that neons aren't supposed to be that hardy but I cycled with them and some guppies before I realised a fishless cycle was better and the neons did awesome, while the guppies did not. They have been quite hardy for me actually. Must be lucky. :dunno:

Yeah the last time i cycled a tank it was a 10gal and i just borrowed 2 pearl danios and put them in after a while to cycle it, well they did the job very well plus they layed eggs in the tank and i now have 12 pearl danio fry swimming about in it :D !
