ideally id like to go with the red one but im not sure if the location of the hole will weaken the tank too much.

the blue option is next, id drill in the corner then come down and across back into the unit to the sump.

the yellow route is the last option as once the height has been drilled theres no changing the water level.

what should i go for?

Doesn't really matter that much, for the most part the location is what you think looks good. Just be 100% sure that the bottom isn't tempered glass...you can NOT drill tempered glass, as it will shatter pretty much no matter what.

+1 on the tempered glass.

Something else to think about as well, as I was having the same dilemma a few months ago.
I decided to drill my hole on the back panel at the water level and I'm glad I did.

Originally I wanted to drill it all the way at the bottom, but to do that you need to have a completely waterproof overflow (weir). Otherwise, if your pump turns off, water will slowly fill the overflow from wherever it is leaking and go down into the sump therefore draining your tank down to wherever the leak is.

Having set-up my tank and siliconing the overflow in myself, my overflow has more than one leak in it, but since my hole is at water level, it doesn't matter :)

how do you check if its tempered?

i was gonna use a single piece of pipe from the water level to the sump that way it will avoid any risk of leakage overflow.

What size is the tank? Most tanks over 40g are tempered bottoms. If you can't find out if it is or isn't, call the company.

If you call like me and the company tells you "It's not suppose to be but we can't guarantee it isn't", then I wouldn't risk it.

its a juwel rio 125L. iv been browsing the forums and it seems that the glass is not tempered but the manufacturer advises on not drilling it anywhere.

im gonna try it -_-. fingers crossed

cheers, went with the red option and it seems spot on. only problem thaty i had was that the drill bit was 32mm and the pipe was 32mm inside, 34mm outside. had to file away another 2mm from the tank, the unit and the shelf
