What to put in a 2.5 gallon tank

Ottos grow to 2 inches in the best of conditions. You should not keep white clouds or barbs or tetras or any fish that needs to swim my danios are not very happy in my 10 gallon And I'm going to move them when I get a 30 gallon.

I've got a betta in a 3-gallon, and after fussing for weeks over the choice of algae eater, I'm going to try two otos. I've found a good local source, and I have plenty of brown algae for them to start on :) They grow no bigger than 2 inches.

aaaack! Ottos are messy, messy fish. Sure they clean up but they usually put out as much as they take in,if ya catch my drift. If fish swimming around with 6" trailers is your thing :dunno:

Keep in mind that they like a current and to be kept in groups.

Now...I'll speak my mind since I'm in here posting already. A 2.5 gallon or 3...hey even a 5, is too small (IMO) for anything except a betta. I'm not going to argue about white clouds, I've never even seen one...are they kind of like feeder fish?

As for algae...a small tank that gets sufficient water changes should have very little algae, if any at all, the brown algae that grows on the sides can be easily scrubbed off with a paper towel.

So what do you suggest? Any 'slow' fish?

I have to agree with the others...anything under a 5 gallon isn't suitable for anything other than a betta (fish wise). Go with African Dwarf Frogs....full of character. :D

Why don't you want to up-grade to atleast a ten? More room...more choices. ;)

I have to get rid of/give homes to at least 8 bettas before I start on a 20L I have waiting. If I do choose a betta to have the 2.5 all to himself, which one should it be? They don't sell ADFs around me.

On a side note, ...

Wuvmybetta, are you sure you mean "otos" and not "plecos" there? I've never seen an oto make any noticeable mess.

If the tank was 2" high , 4" wide and the rest in length with little/no substrate and a decent current 3 gall would be plenty for a few minnow/zebra ish fish.. They need the room to work out :)

I would take your time and work on selling off (crys) some of (crys) your... oh I can't even say it :*)
But... do the fish right, and put them in a larger tank :)

If you have to get rid of bettas to set up a 20L why are you setting up this tank? Wouldn't that just be adding to your problems?
Since afd's stay at the bottom of the tank I would get 2 since they like to be in groups and then a betta since they stay at the top! Maybe you can put a betta in that one and no one will notice and say you sold it or something....

Hi Itty Bitty Betta :)

If your filter is safe, I think ADF are your best choice. If you can't find them where you live, wait awhile. I've seen them in Petland Discounts although they usually have the ACFs. (And the sales people don't seem to be able to tell the difference.) If it's like last year, frogs of both kinds were more readily available in the spring than in the rest of the year especially at the independent lfs that I go to.

The ADFs do not need heat and might even be better off in an unfiltered tank, so you might want to keep them in mind as an option for a betta tank even if it's not cycled. If the time comes that you can get them, do; they're very little work to care for and I'm sure you'll enjoy them. :D

No, I had ottos and they were big time "poo'ers" :/ , only my opinion and experience

I just can't imagine a tank that size being able to hold the waste of one otto :dunno:

You could keep a few females together or a dwarf gourami or some ottos alone or you might be able to find some local sucker type fish and keep them happy.

I do have 3 females, but....

The Little Empress is very dominant and I'm afraid she'll do damage to little Awww who is also stubborn. Those two flared constantly at each other when their containers were next to each other during a water change. Awww never backed down even though she is half the size (maybe less) of Little Empress. Awww is tiny just slightly bigger than a neon tetra. Jewel, the largest of the three, is passive so I see no problem with her.
