What Made You Decide To Set Up An Aquarium?

My sons turned up from the fair one evening with four goldfish so we had to get a tank to put them in. We only used the mixing bowl for the first night as the shops had been shut a couple of hours when the fish arrived!

When I grew older and moved out, I missed having an aquarium. I lived in flats too small to keep one (and the legal minimum tank size to keep fish in here is 40 liters) so I didn't have one. water fish instead.

I wish more countries had laws like this!

I walked past the section at P@H and thought ooooo marine fish. Then thoght it was maybe too much for my first attempt. Looked at the tropical fish and delved in. Lost two fish, found this site, saved the rest with a hard 4-8 weeks.

MTS took over and I now have a 190 Litre within a few months. If I didnt move around so much I would have more tanks. I am now starting on live plants and have already asked for a CO2 kit for my birthday. I use liquid drops ATM. I have started fiddling with moss and attaching it to rocks, wood and stones and aquascaping. Just waiting to see if all my plants thrive.

I got one too many injuries playing rugby this year so wanted to find an interest that would occupy my more sensitive side. I remembered my fascination with my mums tank as a toddler, especially the excitement when the Khuli loach made an infrequent appearance, so decided to give it a go. I am now totally obsessed. I will be playing rugby again next season though.....

I walked through the fish section at petco and saw the orange platies and thought wouldn't a tank full of those look great? After I bought a few I realized I didn't want a whole tank of them but other fish too :) thus was born the fishy dream :)

My father got me a 2ft complete tropical set up second hand from a work college in my early teens. (in the 70s)

It had a bevelled polished chrome frame and hood and was made in the US.

Thinking back it was a real piece of craftsmanship, Wish I still had it.

Edit...Think it was probably stainless steel polished up like a mirror.

My father had a 55 gallon tank when I was growing up that had a beveled chrome looking frame and 2 separate chrome hood light setups. with the iron stand. He has crushed green glass substrate and it looked "beast" using my son's terminology.

He kept silvery looking Angels, pink Kissing Gouramis, a Red Tailed Shark, and various Platys & Swords and oddball catfish.

It looked like a 55 gallon version of this:

I think I need to upgrade lol

I know, the chrome retro look would be in style now too :good:

The funny thing is I remember the crushed green glass the most. The tank was setup between the livingroom & dining room and I recall how it looked in the summer when all the other lights were off in the house. It had a warm glow................

I have a stressful job/life & the fish calm me too. When you see how simple their lives are you relax

Only stressful thing about it is when fish die and you have no idea why

My hubby likes to shut me up. I fiddle with my tanks so much, I haven't had time to nag him....whenever I Start, he gets me another tank :fun:

Oh....I should have tried that last weekend when we saw this beautiful pink Betta at a local LFS! I am still kicking myself mentally for not getting him! He had these opaque fins with red spots like someone had done some artful water colouring on him.
