What Is The Typical Fish Keeper?

I just finished my second year of a bio major chem minor, so I don't think fish keeping to too far out their. Generally if its alive I like it. Doesn't have to be fish. I also enjoy cars, but not too much into sports. Love my kayak. Fish are just what I got into first and currently can't afford more tanks, nor have the time and space. I'm interested in lots of stuff though. I love water and anything to do with it. Its amazing stuff from every angle. Simple stuff like swimming, kayaking, tubing, to the chemistry and physics behind it.

I'm not popular enough to be asked about my hobbies  but 3 of my friends have fish, only one of them actually pays much attention to what I say, although he has marine so I don't say much. The other two have tropical but they don't like it much when I say what they are doing wrong, its not as if I'm nit picking either with a lot of the stuff I say! One has about 15 tetra, all different sorts in an under filtered 5g tank, he got fish before me though so he's fooling himself into thinking he knows more, I've tried to explain but don't want to lose them as friends.
People aren't really surprised when they learn I keep fish, most either go "cool" or give me a nasty look and say "that's weird, suits you perfectly."

lol i free run, that contrast alot with the fish hahah most at school call me fish boy tho .. not flip boy so its something else, i dont realy give a #40## what other people think about keeping fish ... so what if its nerdy .. its fun :p

I am a high school educated person with some college training. I work in a technical position as a scheduler of work in a nuclear power plant. For many years I was licensed to supervise reactor operators but have allowed my license to lapse to pursue my present career. I have been a fish keeper since I was a child in grade school but am presently considering becoming a retired person with a hobby in fish. My work in the power industry has given me considerable insight into pumping systems and chemical control systems but I cannot begin to say that I have a college degree in such things. Instead I have a practical working knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, engineering and to some degree fish. With my broad background, I find that I can quickly learn almost any subject and spend much of my working hours doing computer database applications development.
You might say I am a typical fish geek.

when i went to an interview and was asked what hobbies im into, along with all the usuals i said fishkeeping..
he said wow thats interesting so whose fish do you mind and do you mind them when thier away

id imagine its even worse for a women so what do you do for a liveing and do people bekieve you keep fish ?

No one has ever questioned me, they've just said "I didn't know you had fish"

I'm 25, female and I'm an engineer.

I know loads of people who have fish (most of them are all young).

Edit: I've had fish since I was about 8.

this thread is interesting, surpringly a lot of students. Although that may be because the older you are the less likely you'll use the computer so much :look:

I've always wanted fish from childhood but they were too expensive at the time...

I ended up getting a tank because I was doing a brief on 'grow your own' and looked into fish. This reminded me of my interest so I bought a fish tank which i've almost finished cycling :D

My hobbies are weight training, shooting, drawing and similar things :)

I'm just shy of 22, a vet assistant, but people still seem surprised with me having fish! My boyfriend is military and also my age. I guess he has trouble with his coworkers thinking he is a wuss having fish. *shrug* I actually get off lucky though. One of my coworkers currently has a tropical fish tank as well and another coworker I had who moved had a 75 gallon tank with cichlids. So, I have something to relate to with the people I work with. However with friends outside of work I can bore them to tears talking about my fish. Yet, they're always more than willing to look at a photo of my personal 5.5 gallon tank. Apparently they're is something exotic about a heavily planted tank with 2 gorgeous bettas.

I love fish, but I still like dogs more. You can't decorate a dog though like a tank. Therefore the tank(s) will always be around. (At my family house I have a jack russell, brittany spaniel, 3 cats, 2 ringneck doves, tree frogs, a winter white russian dwarf hamster, syrian hamster, and hermit crabs) And my bf has his tanks and a dachshund mix and soon our jack russell pup. We both love animals...all kinds!

Hobbies outside the animal world include gardening, writing, digital art, photography, and working with clay.
This is the kind of art I do...cartoony dogs and sometimes fish! http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs44/f/2009/093/0/e/Dog_Among_Fish_by_LarkPash.jpg
