I grew up out in the country, and was chasing the wildlife as soon as I could walk, especially reptiles and amphibians. This was the 1960's. We had aquariums from time to time- metal framed with a slate bottom. Wish I still had those. My dad showed me how to seine and dip net for small fish. We had a 29 gallon with native minnows, sunfish, northern pike, crawdads- everything. Then we added tropical fish to the mix. I especially remember swordtails and how cool it was to have SHARKS (red tail). We had trouble with cloudy water, so we kept emptying and breaking down the tank, scrubbing the gravel, etc. Nothing worked. We didn't know about cycles- or anything, really. Not much survived long term, except maybe bullheads, which outgrew the tank and had to be released.
Since then, I have had aquariums off and on. Reptiles and amphibians have always been my main hobby, but I think there is a lot of cross over between the two.
I still love seining, when I can get someone to go with me.
