What fish do you think is underrated?

[Dwarfs]

Overrated: Livebearers (guppies, platys, swordtails), cories, tetras, danios, blue/gold/german rams, blood parrots, dwarf gouramis, bettas ( a little bit).

Underrated: Purple spotted gudgeons, ropefish, african butterfly fish, badis badis, Most oddballs but those are some I have and enjoy Bolivian rams are a bit underrated as well, they are ignored for their more colorful, less hardy cousin Some loaches, including the horseface, FW halfbeaks, which are livebearers but much more unheard of than guppies and "endlers". And cichlids, a lot of aquarists think that they are very territorial and need a lot of room, but that's only for some.

OVERRATED DISCUS?!?!?!?! Oh come on now, the pinnacle of all cichlids, one of the most challenging objectives in the hobby, not to mention one of the prettiest fish on the planet.. No NO my friend, leave the discus off that list

One of the most ugly, flat looking, circular, delicate, and expensive. The worst combination of characteristics ever. JMO.

What I ment by Underrated Discus is that most people think that Discus are impossible to keep but they are not. All you need is water changes and good food and they will be fine. I didnt mean that they are not the King of the aquarium because they are. Also they are not ugly but they are flat looking, delicate but you dont have to be a rocket scientist to keep them. But yes they are expensive but for good reasons. The main reason why most are so expensive is its hard to find really good Discus. Alot of Discus people get are hormoned because the breeders are not good enough to produce good quality fish so they hormone them so they look better. Keeping Discus requires alittle more maintance than most fish but they are much more rewarding.

I do think that some, like the HM is overrated, but what about the females and plakats? Theyre such great fish, and have great personalitys.

I think its wrong to insult a fish that can defend itself. Like calling them brainless, and stupid, thats just wrong. Your all such big and mature people picking on a little fish, its like picking on a baby, saying its stupid because it cant talk.
The fish arent brainless because they arent your favorite. And it seems like alot of cichlid people are saying stuff about fish being brainless. well heres something for yall, cichlids are THE MOST OVERRATED FISH EVER! Everyone thinks theyre such cool fish, and colorful, and this and that. Theyre not even nice! They killeachother and theyed frecking bite you as well. Especially fish like oscars, and jewel cichlids, Though not many people have them, and they are nicer because theyre red.

Oh, yeah, and they are overrated. And they are so not the pinnacle of all cichlids, Theyre are so many nicer ones out there. Like rams. Oh and let see, Id say Angelfish are the pinnicale, because so many people have had them.

Oh yeah cichlids are mean and they kill each other, I'm sorry but a lot of us are not "grossed out" or even that upset, if fish get into a fight, and one wins. Its not like were purposely fighting fish, its nature.

And having a fish that bites you isn't the worst thing, I mean its kind of badass.

Not realy. Discus are cheaper than almost all marine fish, and there are tons of more expensive freshwater fish ($37,000 Gold Arrowana's and sometimes $100,000 Gold Koi) .
I love platys, and I don't see how their over rated (it seems like most of the ratings poo on them, so how they get a high rating is beyond me) and I think they are very friendly and attractive fish. Plus I like how easy it is to tell them apart.
Even though cichlids will kill each other in territorial disputes, they have the most expressive and unique personality's out there, plus they are very colorful and easy to breed.
The only fish I'm disappointed in are tetra's, They seem to lose their sparkle after a while and have no real definable personality's.

I think SirMinion was referring to some of the ones photographed and posted in this forum as the ones being like a torn piece of tissue paper floating in the tank (and/or all bettas)

I have to say i agree, they're nice and pretty but i just don't get it

there are over 100 species available from the wild, although at the moment only 36 can be kept by aquarists, they come in many shapes sizes and colours

overated=well I havn't come across one yet

-definately bettas (not that I dislike them, but I dont get all the hoopla)
-Oscars are probably my least fav cichlid


Inderrated -
-Plecos and all other catfish. I think they are every bit as fascinating to watch as my other fish. And very cute.
- Ill second the rainbows too. They are awsome.
-Cichlids. Especially the red devil. I love them cuz they are feisty. Have tons of personality, and are smarter than some people I know

I posted that I think bettas are overated againt the advice of my missus, ladyMinion, who expected a flame war, but it seems that many many people agree with me.

I don't have anything against bettas, they are, after all living creatures and therefore miraculous, but I just don't understand all the big obsession.

Remember guys and gals, this is just an opinion, don't hate me for it!

I don't really think any fish is overrated...

Underrated- I think tiger barbs get a bad rap because people don't keep them properly. They are definately an awesome fish when kept in the right conditions


Now ya know I can't come in here and not defend the bettas. I've said it before and I will say it again, if you think bettas are boring you've either never had one, or you didn't care for it properly. My betta tanks are as active as my mbuna tank, and thats hard to beat
