What endangered species for 42 gallon

Hi, I just got a 42 gallon tank. I am wanting to have one of the less common types that are endangered. It really ticks me off that conservationists, scientists and governments dont to anything. It is really up to hobbyists to keep the species alive.
I am considering betta persephone, but would love other suggestions

EDIT: I would like to make it clear that I am not doing this just to be able to say I have a rare fish. I genuinely care about what is happening to these animals

Hello. I am new to the forum, but not to conservation efforts.
You do not mention the provenance of yur hypothetical fish. Where did it come from- Wild sourced? we have quite a few endangered species in NZ which are endangered partly through the pet trade and through private collectors - i.e. poachers.
Also- in NZ if you produced fry from captive bred fish you would be prosecuted for putting them back into a wild environment because of the risk of introducing new disease the the wild populations
Why not do conservation work in the filed, or donate to those who try to protect the natural habitats instead??? Please?

I am mainly looking at tank bred specimens whose habitats are already destroyed. I get where you're coming from though. I am from NZ so definitely know what you're talking about

You're a conservationist? That's great! I always love hearing from people working in the conservation field, especially on this other animal forum I'm in.

If I may add as well, there are many species in which they are extinct in the wild, only surviving due to small captive bred populations scattered around (even if the origins of those populations were wild) when their habitats were destroyed.

Examples would be some goodeid species.

Yep, I am looking into the tequila splitfin. Havent decided yet though
