What endangered species for 42 gallon

48.5 x 17.5 x 13

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?

What is the GH (general hardness), KH (carbonate hardness) and pH of your water supply?
Ph is 6.3 gh is between 12 and 44 ppm in my area, forgot the exact number

Yes, Zebra Plecos are not cheap.

I saw them at one of my LFS.
I think one of my LFS has a building/facility that specialized in breeding beautiful Plecos.

Some Plecos are really beautiful but not cheap.

I think Colin may have more ideas of rare species fish.

Some Apistogrammas species are quite rare and hard to find.
You can take a look at this website.

But don't get hooked to it ...LOL

I would look at unusual Betta species. There are mouth brooding Bettas that would do great in your tank with soft acid water.

Various small African and South American cichlids would be fine. Stuff like Apistogrammas (mentioned above), but also Nanochromis or Pelvicachromis species.

Maybe one of the splashing tetras (Copeina or Copella species).

Wow I didnt realize that there was only about 50 in the wild :(

There are many zoos working on rehabilitating them (Chester Zoo in UK for one), so there are definitely more than 50. I think they release around 400 at a time(?), though I'm not sure.
I think only 50 wild born ones. They were thought to be extinct in the wild other than released specimens until they found a 13 foot pool with 50

Ah I see what you mean, 50 in a wild population. The released ones are either just in a simulated environment out in the wild but still depend on humans for care, or they reintroduced them to other places where they used to live historically, in which those ones are fully wild now but were reintroduced.
