I recently came across a discussion about the symbolism of birds, and it got me thinking—what does it mean when someone sees a dead owl? Owls have long been associated with wisdom, mystery, and even omens in different cultures. Some believe that spotting a dead owl can symbolize the end of a cycle, transformation, or even a warning.

In Native American traditions, owls are often seen as spiritual messengers, while in some European folklore, they are linked to changes or hidden knowledge. But is there any truth to these beliefs, or is it just superstition?

I’d love to hear if anyone here has ever encountered a dead owl and what they think it might mean! If you're curious about different interpretations, I found this interesting article on the meaning of a dead owl: dead owl meaning

What are your thoughts? Have you ever had a unique experience with owls?

I love owls, and I love symbolism. I see it as a lovely cultural thing. I read a lot of mythology and quite enjoy learning about how religions have evolved. It doesn't mean I believe in them, just as the many tales I've read about mystical owls may show me ancient perspectives without being the least bit true.

I've seen dead owls, and I thought it meant a bit of break for the local mice, for the short period before a new owl came into the hunting territory.

Stories of magic and gods can say a lot about the people who made them up, and that's really interesting stuff. They say a lot about the people who believe them now and back then, and what they want and wish about.

I was once walking in a forest after dark when I was a younger city guy with very little woods experience. I could barely see the path, and had to walk 7 km and then row a boat across a lake to get back to our cabin. I walked directly under an unseen owl which took flight, swooping down from its branch and missing my head by very little as it tried to gain altitude. It scared me for a second, but it was so beautiful once I realized what it was. It was a huge bird with its wings spread.

The meaning? On a starlit, black night in heavy forest, it was another reminder of how wonderful this world is. The owl may have made up a story of the scraggly groundcreeper that sneaks up on owls that doze too soundly, and maybe in owl world there's now a myth about that.

I personally don't think there is any meaning 🤷🏻‍♀️ it just died.

It means an owl recently kicked the oxygen habit.

I admire owls. They are stealthy, resilient, observant, well-camouflaged, and not easily panicked.

They are like Cats.

It depends how it happens. If you see a dead bird it doesn't have much implications...

If a Great blue heron goes trough your bay window, It mean that it's going to cost a lot of $$$.
I had a Gosshawk break through the glass on my closed in porch. He broke another window trying to get out. He still couldn't get out, so I went into the porch and used a stick to push open one of the windows. It finally flew out. It was over $200 to replace the broken glass.

In our case the heron turned to mash and created one of the most disgusting thing I ever had to clean With feathers all over the place. And a 5000$ bill at the end.

Another "encounter"... Is when I learned that a gray car is more difficult to see for pigeons and got my windshield shot.

I have a couple more with "birds"...

As long as they don't die in your presence. It's all good.

If you are a Cherokee Chief brandishing his staff in the air... And unfortunately kills a bald Eagle... You might have a lot of problems coming your way.

Sadly, this one is true. We where going down a country path up to our shack. There was a motorcycle in front of us and the guy simply right pass a curve directly in the scenery... We stopped the car and went to see what was going on and if we could help... We found the poor guy dead with a crow stuck in his throat.

So... Like I said as long as they don't die in my presence...
