original post: here but in wrong spot

so what can we put with this convict

we kinda wanna avoid oscars but if they are the only thing we might put one or two in there

we have a large (6 to 7 inches) plec too. that will go in with him.

thanks for any help! :)

A 55 gallon is too small for an Oscar, but you may try (correct me if i'm wrong people)

Green Terror
Jack Dempsey
Texas Cichlid
Blue Acara
Parrot Cichlid

Those are just to name a few.

Adding another cichlid to the tank will be risky, it could easily end in death. The convict will class the whole tank as it's own and will not like new tank mates.

What type of plec is it? A lot grow too big for a 55.

so in a 55 gallon we cant put anything with the convict??

i believe it's a common, it used to be in his friends pond, i dont know how or why he acquired it really.

The parrot cichlid would most definetely work but would probably outgrow the tank, firemouth cichlids are not as wussy as blue acaras, also they are not to big (as the green terror, texas and jd may be) so they may be a good choice.

As jayjay said alot of plecs grow to big for a 55 gal, it's mostly likely a common and these have the potential to reach 2ft, but they rarely get over 18'.

55 US gallons are apropriate.
It may be appropriate for a single specimen however many people disagree and say the tank should be atleast 75 gallons.I've recently seen an albino oscar which must of been about 15 inches long.In a 55gal, depending on the dimentions, it may just be able to turn around or it may find it very hard (apparently quite a few 55gal tank are 13' wide?).Whatever you do, do not get an oscar

Yeah, I think the most common 55 is an All Glass with a 13 inch width

I have always heard 75 gallons, but all of a sudden some people have been saying 55, and I have seen many 55's, it just looks too small

thanks guys, i think he has his eye on green terrors firemouths and JDs... the only thing i am worried about is the pet store usually sells them small and the convict is big, if he provides plenty of hiding spaces they should be fine right?

55 g per oscar is the rule to live by of you'll start running into all sorts of problems with you filtration system

Other convicts... You will find that convicts breed rather easily and it is amazing to watch the parents take care of the fry and raise them… eventually you will have to deal with what to do with the fry but that is for another topic. Give any fish you put in there plenty of hiding places so they’ll have a fighting chance while the current convict gets used to them.

Another convict of the opposite sex. Would be fun to breed them. :good:

But a Standard 55 is 13 or 13.5" wide. You're unlikely to get a L48"xW18"xH15" unless it was custom made.
