This reminds me. Years ago my grandfather saw me trying to make a small wooden boat out of some scraps so he decided to start a project with me. We were making it from scratch. We got part of it done, then he had to go back to texas. He said he would finish the boat and send it back in the mail. Its been 10 years and I still havent seen the boat.

I started making a quilt in 1987 and haven't finished it yet. Texas is a busy place

Model ships... they were such a thing when I was a kid. I had a flotilla of plastic kit ships, some with rigging and elaborate paint jobs. I thought they'd gone the way of stamp collecting and canary breeding as once common hobbies that now hang on by the skin of their teeth. I don't think I could find the time to do that now, unless I were to live to one of those mythological lifespans, but the large wooden ones can be things of beauty.

We were flat hunting years ago and found a good place that had a garage. The deal was an older gentleman would have full access to the garage for his lifespan (not 950 years :D). He was building a single seater, 1920s model wooden airplane fuselage. It was a thing of beauty. It was already too wide to ever be removed from the garage, even without its wings. It was one of the most eccentric things I've ever seen, and I kind of wished we'd taken the place to see how it worked out. He was in his eighties and had been one the project for 30 years. He apparently worked on it for several hours every morning.

Wooden airplane stuck in garage of the month would be a niche contest, but it really was magnificent craftsmanship. I've often wondered what they did with it. This was 35 years ago, so I expect that something had to give.

I'm sure some people would look at my fishroom as just as quirky.

I wonder if there are a lot of young model railroad makers out there, or if that energy has all shifted to gaming.

I think @Back in the fold should have bought this model kit instead of the intricate model ship he bought.

Take a close look at that picture and you will see the same ribbing and planking that is done on a larger model . This kit is probably more difficult because the fairing of the ribs and the planking are done in a smaller area which makes any imperfections stand out all the more .
