What are you doing today?

Today the Proclamation of Republic completes its 135th anniversary in Brazil. Despite the term "proclamation", military officers carried out a coup d'etat.

Since then, so many administrations have been plagued by instability, revolts, and much more. Brazil had a president who governed by a state of exception for almost uninterrupted 5 years (Artur Bernardes).

Pedro II was extremely popular, even among authorities, intellectuals, and scientists abroad. In 1876, he inaugurated a fair with then-U.S. president Ulysses Grant.

Tonight , as it rose , the full moon was shining right in my fish room and directly on the twenty gallon with my Aplocheilus lineatus Golden Wonder killifish . If that doesn’t get them into the egg laying mood I don’t know what will . Did a big water change on them last Wednesday and made three new spawning mops . Got my fry rearing aquarium set up again and I now sit back and await the rebirth of my lineatus horde . Life is good .

All helpful developments. I additionally recommend playing some Smokey Robinson for them.

I had one loss from my trip, though it wasn't travel caused. My old red eared slider turtle had been looking off for a few weeks, and I found her dead when I returned. She had clearly died in her sleep, 2 months short of 41 years old. That's a long time to have a pet. 1984 to 2024. I thought she was old when I inherited her from my parents, and she still had close to 30 years to live back then.

Wow Man ! A 41 year old turtle . I knew they lived a long time but not that long , not a native North American turtle . That’s a drag but . . . oh well , huh ?

Some turtles can be 50 years old. The tortoise though, can sometimes reach ages of 300. (Yes, three hundred, I didn't misclick another 0 loll)

My grandfather, who was from Maranhão state, had several tortoises (in Teresina, Piauí) from the species Chelonoidis carbonarius. He died a few years ago, so I do not know how they are now, but I believe that the tortoises are decades old.

In Brazil, there are only four authorized businesses that commercialize red tortoises, and only one is allowed to commercialize the Trachemys dorbigni. New licenses have been suspended since 2002. In practice, there is a monopoly in Brazil for Trachemys dorbigni (recently this species was prohibited for selling, buying, and even maintaining at home in Rio Grande do Sul, despite the Trachemys being native to... Rio Grande do Sul) and an oligopoly for red tortoises. These legalized animals cost almost half of the median wage in Brazil. It seems this is not an issue for the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (acronym CADE, in Portuguese). The dealers from illegal wildlife (a great issue in Brazil, as well as narcotrafficking) appreciate this.

Teresina is a sweltering city. When I went to the city, the temperatures were above 35 ºC. They usually like to sleep in an old warehouse. Sometimes they also wanted to enter the house. Some pictures I took of them:

@connorlindeman Is that Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance ? That would be a great build . My HMS Bounty is still in dry dock . I really want to finish it but it’s a very involved build . I just can’t seem to be able to find the time when I can be left alone to work on it . Wood models are way different from plastic kits . You will also need a few special tools when it comes to the planking and a good supply of various clamps . Checkout www.micromark.com for tools .

Ooooooh, I think it is! I didn't catch that. That WOULD be a fun one to have. But it would be easier to build the post-November 21 Endurance:
