What are differences between aquariums owned by rich people vs aquariums owned by poor/normal people?

My abusive sister lied to the courts and took out a vro (violence restraining order)against me and had me thrown out of my home so she could move in and squat there while I died on the street. Seven months later the vro was cancelled because there was no grounds for it to be issued. However, that was too little too late because my sister had chucked or sold everything I owned. She killed my birds, she killed my fish, she threw out my plants, she lied to the cops and had me arrested numerous times for allegedly breaching the vro after it was cancelled. She cost me everything I owned and cared about.

Nobody in the government, courts or cops wants to comment on the matter even though the cops lied about what they did to my house keys and they didn't give me a copy of the vro for my own records. The cops even changed details on the vro after I had signed and dated it, which is against the law. And the cops didn't remove the vro from their system after it had been cancelled and 18months later it was still on their system after the courts ordered it to be removed.
Wow. Jeez... That's some real bad luck. In fact it's not so much luck as being repetitively screwed over really bad. Obviously there's nothing I can say that's going to really help or change your circumstances, but I do sincerely mean it when I say I feel for you. Really hope you manage to get back on your feet. Sometimes life is cruelly unfair.

You know Colin, if I were you I would seek revenge especially those who killed my pets.

It will all back fire on his sister some day. If he seeks revenge, it could just make matters worse...

@Colin_T, what kind of fish/tanks/birds did you use to have?

The court system is money driven. It is like a trap really...once they draw you in,they like to see if you have enough to spend. Fighting tickets on TV is easy- they always dismiss it right? Then you try it..
I've never had a DUI,but what I hear is horror stories...its months of classes,$10,000 in lawyers and fines..and finding a way to get around- to work. I mean you would think alcohol was illegal. Funny how this country is on self medicating-lol.

Tbh I haven't noticed a huge difference. "Rich" people seem to have bigger tanks, more equipment, usually better quality equipment, more expensive fish/"rarer" fish. But then I haven't met anyone whos "poor"... After all, its a pretty expensive hobby.

I think you're on the right track. Keeping a pet in general means that you are either going into debt or have extra money to spend on a hobby like pet ownership. I've always thought fish keeping was a cheaper pet and hobby than others...boy was I wrong when I saw the startup cost and all the time/stuff that goes into maintenance (I spend at least 2 hours a week on maintenance and time is money). Rich or poor, you're spending money to stay in this hobby.

And I agree with the differences in equipment with the other members above, but you also need to take into account personal preference. Some people like a utility (cheaper rimmed tanks) versus the aesthetics of a glass rimless tank. For instance, I bought an acrylic tank, which is more expensive than glass, when I actually wanted a glass tank. The only reason I went with acrylic is that glass is dangerous around my small kids and acrylic is stronger. Just my 2 cents.

I thought it was more offensive to rich people the way everyone was getting stuck into them :)
I agree. I'm not poor, but middle class, but you would think the way I spend money on this hobby that I was rich. I just make sacrifices in other things so that I can enjoy this hobby...eat out less, don't go to the movies, etc.

The rich have other people build their large custom tanks and have others do all the maintenance on them. The rich just enjoy the end results without the work.
Took my words right out of my mouth. Totally agree.

I agree that it does come down to personal preference. I know "rich" friends; they have millions of dollars but their saltwater set up is your average tank. Nothing fancy as far I can tell. Then I know some people with less money with really "lavish" tanks.

If you look at the very largest home tanks on youtube...you see a few- especially reef- super high end tanks owners pay others to do the maintenance. Still, most of the ones I've seen the owner is the main guy.
One nice wealthy guy I talked to had a very famous and large reef tank..like the kind that is the size of two bedrooms 3 or 4' deep, that he had people come in and do weekly clean up.
Since the vid was like 3 years old,I asked him how it was coming along and he told me he no longer had that huge aquarium, something caused a wipeout and he wasn't going to start another five years getting it back to what it was.
I worry about that myself. I never intended to spend what I have in restarting the big 240. If it has a wipeout...like a burst seam in the middle of the night? I might give up myself.
I am definitely using all I know to cut corners,- sunlight, home made everything- filter,stand..all of that.
When fish die? I sometimes even think I should have just put Platys. You would never run out of fish.

Yup. I know rich people who still drive beat-up cars and are happy as a clam.

That’s how I would be if I was rich. I wouldn’t go around buying mansions and such. I would still spend my money wisely. I would just have a little bit better stuff.

(I would also have a 4ft tank... ;) :hey: )

I agree. It's not so much about having all the best

You have some people where it is all about status, they have to buy a new car every year or two and the best of everything. It make them feel superior to others. I know several people like that. Deep down they are usually very insecure because they need stuff to make them feel happy. But the happiness never last long because it is an illusion, They have to keep up with others so they are like hamsters on a wheel no real time to enjoy life.

I am not dong my hobby for anyone but myself and the fish, not here to keep up with the Jones' .... I have guppies, and know I will never have ALL the cool looking stuff I see out there, but since I cant, I know I can see others, thanks to the internet,
But, but seeing what is going on out there, not sure if the rich are the only ones spending large sums on fish/hobby!

And to be honest these days where the people act like they got heaps of money and have all these flash things are really in a lot of debt. Money doesn’t by you everything, just be happy with what you have IMO
