I got my master test this a.m so am trying to figure out how much I need per litre to get my tank cycling.
I've got to be doing something wrong here because I've just added 90ml of ammonia to a litre of water and the water in the tube just looks like pee. It's not going green.. help please. I only bought 1 500ml bottle of ammonia should I have got a few? {got the one from Boots}

It's an API master test kit if that heps any.

:-(

{edit} ok it went green now, somewhere between 4 and 8 but does it count since it's been stood for longer than 5 mins? I tested cold water if that makes any difference

I think you must leave it at least 5 mins to get an accurate reading anyway, it won't change if you go longer than 5mins. I also think 90mls sounds like alot in 1 litre of water :blink:

I'll dump the water and try again.. never was too good at chemistry lol

90 ML is WAY too much. I used 5 DROPS per 10 gallons when I cycled my tank. So you'd want to use 5 drops per 38 Liters. After ammonia is detected, drop down to 3 drops per 38 liters until Nitrite levels have dropped to zero. I know drops isn't an exact measurement like MLs, but it doesn't have to be exact.

Make sure you read this thread if you haven't already:

Yeah thanks I read that already, very useful

Have gone from one extreme to the other now lol I changed the container I was mixing water in.. was first using a old milk carton with the top cut off.. now using a glass bowl... well I put 3 drops in {was aiming for one but it came out way quick, will need to grab a medicine dropper} and for 1 litre it went off the chart.. plan number 375 is to find a bigger container and test 5 litres of water.

My mum has a 50 Litre tank and i werent sure how much ammonia to put in either so i got a 10 litre bucket and put 10 drops in to start off with but it was 2 much, so done it again and put 8 drops in and that seemed to be ok so all i had 2 do was tines that by 5 and put that many drops in my mums tank! Im going to do the add daily method!

I tested 5 and it just took 3 drops to get up to about 5, now all I need is for my tank to show up so I can get the rest of my bits and start the cycle and get meself some lovely fish :)
