Any rough ideas how heavy / large a tank can be supported in an upstairs flat?
Assuming standard wooden beams and joists. Don't want to upgrade to a large tank if I'll be sending it crashing downstairs! Would be in a corner right by wall if that makes any difference.

Hahaha

The way i look at it is those beams going across your floor are meant to hold thousands
of pounds without buckling, i wouldnt worry about it to much

That isnt even remotely correct

The floor boards arent designed to hold mass dead weight. a very high percentage of weight in a house is supported on the load bearing walls etc. If yo uwant a large tank in a flat you need to get a plan of the flat and find whcih way the joists run and spread the tank accross multiple joists if possible. If you are really unsure get a surveyor to officially tell you what it will hold. That way if anything happens you are still insured.

USUALLY, any tank from 55g and below is safe in a structure if its placed up against the load bearing wall. Getting over 55g and you should make sure that the floor joists run perpendicular to the length of the tank and then place the tank where those joists meet the wall. In most US construction you're fine up to 90g unless you have a really old decrepid inner-city type home. Corner tanks are almoast always safe cause you're gonna sit over a bunch of joists one way or another ;)

I live in a timber framed house which means no brick/block interior walls. I have my AquaOne 850 (155 ltrs) plus cabinet upstairs with no problems. Check which way joists run and make sure your tank is accross them.

My grand parents have an oldddd house and they have a 75 gallon salt up stairs and no problems at all.. This isnt the cartoons the tank is not gonna break right through the floor and land in your master bedroom's bed.. Of course it would be nice to know which way the beams run's so u can sleep good at night lol :good:
