Water Hardness

Hi, doing a little research while waiting for my tank to cycle...it seems that Dempseys enjoy hard water? Yet many S.American cichlids supposedly need soft? Mine is very hard; measures at 18 degrees gH which is typical of my area.

Thinking even further ahead, would I need to soften the water to facilitate breeding, and if so what is best to use please?

Jack Dempseys are central American cichlids. A lot of them come from liquid rock. 18 gh is pretty hi, but I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a male and female in water, they'll most likely spawn.
