I've made a water change this afternoon (about 1/4 of my 60gl tank). New water was from tap directly. The last change was made some 2 wks ago. I just noticed that one of my goldfish died  and there one who keeps lying on the gravel. My first reaction was to remove the dead one and salt. I did not feed them today, as I would give them bloodworm tomorrow. My water temp is approx 24 Degree Cel., with no heater.

Can anyone help? :/

Did you add dechlorinator to the tap water before adding it to the tank? goldfish don't like chlorine it kills them abit like us swimming in bleach i guess. Were they ok before you changed water?

Hi Bigfish

Yes they were all swimming as usual. I've always used tap water when making water change. May be this time, water contained more chlorine than usual? I do have a dechlorinator of Tetra make, but I purchased it some 2 yrs back. I used it one or two times. Can I still use it? As I said yesterday, I've added kitchen salt and the fish seem ok now (fingers crossed) :)

Do u know what the lowest temp can goldfish live? The water is approx 23-24 Deg Cel? Do I need to put a heater?

thxn for your advice

tom i dont know what kind of goldfish they are but goldfish are cold water fish i think the best tempriture would be somewhere between 5 deg cel and 18 deg cel. so a heater would prolly not be a good buy unless your planning on a very cold winter.as for the water change i htink it might have been too large a water change its best to have a 10-20% water change each week if there is something wrong with the water chem or there are too many fish for the size of the tank or you do not have a filter. the chlorine is mostly gone after 24 hours better to leave it for 48 hours airating as there are ther chems that will evaporate. dechlorinators are an expencive way to teat chlorinated water when time is all you need. ok i dont mean any of this to sound rude so dont get upset but you will need to relaz a little on the water changes i think see what the others have to say about it. hope your fish are ok good luck in future :)

I have my gold fish living at 24'C and they seem to like it, but in winter it can drop to 18'C so thats why i have a heater in there.

How many fish do you have? i have a 60 litres hex tank which is now home to tropicals and my goldfish have got a new 130 litres to play with.

How are they looking?

Hi Bigfish

Well I've a 60lt rectangular tank, with 8 japanesse, 2 lionheads, 2 blackmoors, 1 white angel, 2 blue gourami and 2 3-spot gourami. Fortunately, now all is ok. I really love my lionheads and blackmoors.

Do u breed lionheads?

I went to my lfs yesterday and he told me that it's not necessary to have a heater in my tank as goldfish can support cold water. (back from the cold China). Also, there's no need to have water change often for goldfish.

Anyone has an opinion?

One of the big myths of goldfish is that they can do perfectly fine in a tiny bowl without any water changes., which I think is just mean. I'm glad to hear you have a nice big tank for them, but if you don't do the normal routine of water changes, chemicals might build up. I'm not a big expert on goldfish as much as tropical fish, but I'd play it safe and do a normal amount of water changes.
Good luck!
Valerie

P.S.
If by "kitchen salt" you mean the type that you put on food, you might consider changing to a salt specified for fish. :)

yes i agree with him, maybe u sould add aquariam salt instead of kitchen salt, but that's just my oppinion ,oh well good luck! :hyper:

60l is that about 15 us gallons. Your tank might be a little overstocked being that goldfish are messy.......to combat extra waste do water changes more often

Save yourself some of your hard earned money...Table salt is fine..... :D
Table Salt contains iodine which will kill your fish. you can buy pure sea salt or kosher salt though.
Which is fine for human consumption. I have not ever tried it though, so I am unaware of a taste difference... anyone know?

table salt tastes less salty if that makes any sense. I keep kosher rock salt in a pepper grinder and use that for all of my cooking as it has a purer taste.

me thinks my brain not work to good ne more...

I use sea salt rather than table salt. I believe that sea salt are more rough and bigger as compared to table salt which refined. :D
