Try make sure the panda Corys are a decent size when you buy them, i just recently put some very young ones in my tank and they have to compete for food with the others which can be quite hard. Im feeding frozen bloodworm at the moment and some brine shrimp paste on the underside of some bogwood where only the pandas can currently get to. I started with 10 last week, down to 8 now :( Was expecting to lose at least 1 or 2 though, they were in a lfs in a low tank where kids had been wacking on glass over half term, stressing them out :( Made sure i got a decent deal on them though, £2 each  The rest look quite healthy though, fingers crossed.

Once again we have an example of bad advice from LFS. Cardinals are wayyyyy tougher in new tanks than neons (& look better imho anyway).
"Oh sir, sorry to here your Neons died, we have them on offer for 5 for a tenner if you want to restock". Kerching
It just goes to show that the way to choose fish is to go to the LFS armed with a pen & paper, take notes of what takes your fancy, then do your OWN research.

To give the bloke credit, he showed me a tank of cardinals that were just in and they were clearly not for sale, he said they were recovering from the delivery. Everything I've read on here contradicts him though.

Thanks Tizer, perhaps there's a tip there, only buy Thurdsays and Fridays in a week where there have been NO kids in the shop. That really does annoy me, there are quite clearly signs in every FS saying NOT to tap the glass, and my own kids know the score totally, yet every other kid always seems to be running riot. GRRRRRRRRRRR [/rant]

Day 16:
Ammonia 0, Nitrite 5, PH 7.6, PH High 8.2

Come on Nitrite, move your a**.

Re-dosed to 4-5 ppm Ammonia.

I reckon you have a few more days to go before you start to see your nitrites drop, hang in there :good:

Keith.

Yeah I know Keith, but staring at the liquid urging it to turn blue for 5 minutes is starting to stress me out .

I remember doing the exact same thing, fingers crossed it won't be much longer for you.

Day 17: Ammonia >1 Nitrite = 5 PH = 7.6 PH High = 8.2

Took a trip to the LFS again today to look at more fish, ended up leaving with a gravel (sand) cleaner and 2 more peices of driftwood. It's bl**dy addictive this hobby :sly:.

and expensive at the start :)

As i mentioned before im a few weeks ahead of you and now the tank is ticking over nicely and stocked im pondering a CO2 unit for healthy plants. Quite a few of mine are turning a light green and are draining themselves of their own nutrients while others are doing fine. I think the only way to have a truely healthy plants is the CO2 route :|

Plus i want to find a nice short carpet grass to grow and nothing seems to be suitable without CO2 :|

When you get around to it, dont go mad on Vallis, buy one and see if it survives ok, i got 3 of them and they seem to struggle.

Java Ferm and Moss and Cabomba seem to do great though! :>

Thanks Tizer. I'd absolutely love green and healthy growing plants, but for the first year I'll probably just be experimenting with what works and what doesn't and just those root tab things. Co2 will be looked into next year, but it will be good to see how you do yourself first.

Plants guide

I've been using the above to scout out the best plants :good: for my tank
Shows you how easy and difficult certain plants are and the light amount that you need etc - without that I seriously wouldnt of known where to start

Great stuff, thanks Nemo.

Day 18: Ammonia 0.25 Nitrite 5 PH 7.6 PH High 8.2

Ammonia going down OK, not going to be rushed, the purple tinge of the Nitrite test is starting to bore me now, come on Nitrite bacs, get munching. Not sure whether to re dose or not. I'll think about it over dinner.

Yes, I decided to add Ammonia to dose back to 4ppm.

Day 19: Ammonia 1-2 Nitrite 5 Ph 7.6 PH High 8.2

Ammonia definately crunching faster per day but another purple Nitrite test. It does make me wonder about those poor fishes in tanks where the owner doesn't understand the cycle at the beginning.

AT LAST! The Nitrite eating bacteria are at the table, we have a beautifully blue tube of water :hyper:.

Day 20: Ammonia <0.25 Nitrite = 0, yes that's a big fat zero, PH = 7.6, PH High = 8.2

Not only that but the mighty Watford thumped Millwall 1-0, (but it was so cold).

Exciting news! :good:

You're one step in front of me, I'm praying for nitrite to be present at the moment!
