My first piece of advice is not to buy from chain stores. Don't buy from chain stores unless there's a particularly good reason to. Most chain stores don't keep very good care of their bettas and so buying from them would not only give you a lower quality fish, but also you would be patronizing a company that doesn't treat its animals well.

My best advice is to go to a localy owned or mom & pop shop. Just about any independant fish dedicated store is better than a chain.

Heh, yeah unfortunately this "infatuation" just continues to grow.

We only have two places to buy Betta's (in a neighboring town) - Wal-mart and a mom and pop shop. The Wal-mart here takes decent care of their tanked fish, but their Betta's are another story... I rescued a male from them two weeks ago (rescuing fish is just a bad idea but sometimes I have no self control).

The mom and pop shop is ran by one woman and honestly, she can be a bit clueless... she had a female Betta in a tank with mollies and two comet goldfish (?!)

Wal-mart has about 20 Betta's at any given time, all veiltails and rarely any other color than the common teal/green, except for the red boy I rescued (he turned out to be wonderful). So needless to say, I am envious.

How does one go about finding breeders? I'm in a college town, and I know there's at least one, but I don't know how to find them, and the only places I know of that have bettas are Wal-Mart and PetCo. (PetCo is where I got mine.)

The best place to find breeders are at a mom & pop shop. Most small independantly owned stores breed their own bettas, and if they're a good store, they'll tell you where to find some decent breeders.

The one I go to specializes in half-moons. They even gave me a breeding pair when I told them I was interested in breeding.

I should rephrase... how does one find a mom and pop shop?

You can find a Mom and Pop shop online, through the phone book, through calling around, ads in newspapers ect.
