Hey people, Im after some lights to view my nocturnal catfish. I was wondering where people got their lights from for this. I wasnt sure where to post this topic up but thought this might be the best place. I know im after a blue light or black light. But would like more info on it, any info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Torrens

You can't lose using cold cathode tubes.... Man that was almost a rhyme!!!

I always buy mine off of ebay and sometimes if they have a good deal I'll buy them from one of the local computer shops. They're extremely easy to use and work great as moonlights!

On an OT note... Why didn't the pack get Randy Moss?

It is worth remembering that most fish are very good at seeing the blue end of the spectrum (as water absorbs any red from light very swiftly). Most nocturnal fish will not be acting fully naturally under blue lights.

If you really want to observe nocturnal behaviour, buy a torch and put a red bulb in it (or fit a red light above the tank). This will illumintate the tank to you, but not be well noticed by your tank's inhabitants.

Ok so a red light would be better. That is a good idea about using a torch with a red bulb in it. Will look into it in the future. Might be the best and cheapest option thanks andy.

iairj: Since im in Aus I dont follow the draft and the off season much because its not on tv. Thats a shame they didnt pick Randy Moss cause the packers need a WR

Could also add that although they tend to be slightly more expensive you can get red cold cathodes. Or if you can find any you could do what I did for my snakes. Only £5 worth of LED Christmas lights. You might struggle at this time of year though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think ill be doing some DIY stuff in the coming week or so hehe. Should be interesting

Edit: I have a question about the DIY. For my purposes what colour Cold Cathode should i get? Red? Or Black? Im abit confused :p Electrical stuff ain't my specialty.

Thanks in advance

on this same sort of topic are blue marine bulbs safe for tropical? or do cathodes need to be used? Never thought about Red light....what about a red clear plastic of course with a high resistance to heat placed under the light.... probably would be to bright....

I read in a book I have about the "night light" and it said about using the same type of bulbs as photographs use when they are developing photos. But its seeming to be quite difficult to find any sorta of colour fluro tube around here.
