my discus laid eggs on the intake pipe of my external filter and when they hatched the parents (who did a fantastic job, always fanning the eggs) took the wrigglers in their mouths and kept blowing them back on to the pipe but lower down where there is a ridge, but its right above the suction piece and one by one over two days the filter sucked them all up. but its a community tank so the parents would have had their work cut out protecting them so at least i know i have a pair!

Perhaps try putting tights (pantyhose or what ever they're called for americans) around the inlet part of the filter to stop them getting sucked in next time.

thanks idlefingers i will do that as soon as i see them cleaning the pipe again. i feel sure they will spawn in the same place next time as i cant see a "better" place in the tank

I would personally attach the tights, stockings whatever with a rubberband before they attempt to breed gain and you might distract them when you do it as they're cleaning it.

When my firemouths used to spawn directly under the intake pipe I used a fine pond filter foam and chopped it to size so it fitted over.

I think that tights would be a too fine mesh and clog the intake quickly.

Perhaps buying a large peice of bio sponge and cutyting it to fit over the intake. This way the babies cant get sucked in and it will create a place for bacteria to grow resulting in more filtration.

o well, they have caught me on the hop because yesterday at about 6.00PM they laid their eggs again in the same place before i did anything to block the filter pipe. i couldnt believe how quick they can produce their eggs. it must have been only seven days max between clutches. my rams take twenty odd days between their clutches of eggs

Because in proportion to body size, eggs are very tiny inside a disucs, but the same amount of eggs and size inside a ram takes up much much more room and they need to work harder to produce the same amount of eggs. You get me? Sort of like a chicken, they can lay 1 egg a day. But it would take a quail a month to produce the same volume of eggs as the chickens.

Make sure you check inside your filter for survivors. Open the canister up and take out the media so that there are no hiding places. I'm sure you've seen the threads here about folks finding hidden treasures in their filters!
