ok terrified now ..

my fish have been under the weather to say the least ,got thread running about this . i havent found out whats totally going on with them but now have a big worry.

i have a gravel vac but its hard to get it going as pumping it frightens the fish so i thought id try suck the end and syphon it but got a bit in my mouth ..

anyway to cut a long story short since this happened the other week ... ive suffered burning throat, burning in my ears and im now mostly deaf , had antibiotics from doctor said

poss virus, then no joy just worse given mouthwash, ear drops, nose sniffer still not got my hearing back sounds like im underwater and the pain and buring is terrible...

now heard maybe my fish have tb ? omg will i have got this is this why im so poorly ...

i do have a low immune sysytem and so pretty vunerable i guess, but i hadnt realised about this ... should i see my doc reckon they will say im nuts though ? and how can i tell if

the fish have it,is there a test ?

please help really panicking also will all fish get it ?

please someone put me straight really pannicking here. kaz x

Antibiotics don't work on virus.

How do you know your fish have tb as it hard to say without tests, unless there showing alot of signs of tb.
have to be exposed to tb a long time for it to affect you,.
But people who have a weak immune system are more prone.

thanks i dont no what to think told so much i have 2 seperate tanks set up i started loosing 3 shrimp then guppies in tank one the guppies flick off things go greyish clear in colour ,tails rip ,stay upright in tank on the bottom of gravel.

in tank 2 guppies gone from bright yellow to creamy /seethrough he doesnt eat/sits upright on bottom of tank, body although no rips or cuts looks red/sore in places

so im not really too sure but had heard some horror stories and started to panic

Signs of tb are bent spines, looking really skinny.
Grey patches can be columnaris, parasites, ph shock.
If the fish are flicking it could be a parasite involved.
What are your water stats.

amonia 0
nitrite 0
ph 7.8
nitrite 20

fish does look skinny and seem to spit out food, one has lost all its colour, unsure about bent spine does look a little but not all my guppies are straight anyway so unsure, one is like it is standing upright in the tank but the tail end goes curved along the gravel as its standing.

Being skinny and bent spines can also be internal parasites.
Signs of internal parasites are.
long stringy white poo, or clear mucas poo,.
Red worms prutruding from the anus.
Being skinny or bloated.
Enlarged anus to red inflamed anus.
Fish will sometimes swim on there sides.
Bent spines.
Sometimes they will also flick and rub with internal parasites.
Not eating sometimes.
Guppys can have camallanous worms.

alot of these sound true esp white stringy poo

any ideas what to treat with i have just finninshed treating with protozine which i was sold at lfs , i used day1,2,3 and 6 .

its day 6 today unsure what i do now.

only other med i have is melafix ?

or is there something else

thanks for putting me at ease xx

ive googled the worms to see what they are but my fish are'nt showing any red worms or bit poking out the red line going right through the body looks like a spine but today its less red ?

i think youve got it right it does sound like parasite but i dont no what ?

should i try the differnet med still ? or does it need to be a specific one ?

also are both melfax and protozine the same type of meds ?

now ive stopped protozine as done weeks course should i be adding back carbon filter or remedding ?

soz so many questions but i love my little fishes so dont want to loose anymore also i dont fancy getting any lergy lol x

You don't have to see the worms prutruding from the anus for fish to have internal parasites.
it's easy if you do as least you know for sure.
Internal parasites do alot of damage to the internal organs, so once the fish is really skinny and bent the damage has been done. You still have to treat the whole tank.
Melafix is a bacterial med only good on cuts and wounds.
You need an internal parasite med, not an external parasite med.

tank 1 lost another fish neon tetra and red guppy been pooing non stop for few days white stringy poo.

in second tank pepered cory catfish looks like hes wasting away his back tail and spine were bent when we brought him over month ago but lfs said he was fine and we felt sorry for him he now resembles a tadpole shape 3 corys in this tank are always hiding so hard to see ,but yesterday noticed him definatly wasting away.

when i went to my other lfs 2day they reckon i have tb in tank/fish and also said i should get rechecked out by doctor as its likely ive got it ...

they told me to treat with myxazin and kill red guppy from tank 1, and do same with tank yellow guppy and cory with crook tail/spine do i really have to due this ,or is it over reacting

so now im panicking as my infection isnt doing too good still deaf, bad throat ,itchy, swollen, ulcers in mouth

am i being stupid . plz help ...do i need culling too arggggg

Its hard to say fish tb without having tests done on a fish.
Bent spines and being skinny can also be signs of internal parasites.
Are they showing any other signs.
The lfs are not doctors and should of not said you most likely have it.
If you are worried I would get checked out by a doctor.

Definitely go see your GP and explain what happened! You do not sound well at all - but I doubt you'll need to be put down LOL - you've probably just caught some infection from the tank water. I mean, even though your tank water may be clean enough for fish to live in it's still not the most healthiest drink you could have chosen  It contains dechlorinator for a start - and micro organisms that are not seen by the human eye. Oh, and had you already started adding the Protozine at the time you swallowed some water? If so, then it could be that which has caused the bad reaction in your throat.

Whenever I do water changes or any tank maintenance I sometimes end up with itchy hands afterwards, even though I give them a good wash. I've read that it's best to wear long rubber gloves when putting hands in the tank but I can't find any long enough!

So, if tank water can cause irritation on hands and arms, imagine the irritation it can cause in the mouth and throat! Especially if medications have been in the water too.

Don't be embarrassed to tell your GP your worries, they will understand and it's best they have the whole picture as they can then determine whether you need any test done or what treatment to give you (hopefully not a dose of Myxazin LOL).

As for your fish, I don't think Protozin was the correct medicine to use for your fish in this instance. That's really for whitespot and fungal issues. An anti-bacterial would have been a better option, like Myxazin. I've always had success with this, the few times I've used it.

Anyway, hope you get better soon - but please don't suffer in silence - let your GP know what happened. You're not the first person to have done it and got ill from it either. Have read of others getting sick after swallowing tank water (used to happen more years ago before these new type of syphons came on the market).

Regards - Athena

thanks for that hopefully im just too panicky

well i went doctors pulled up the courage to ask them to check me out and doctor looked at me gone out , said never heard of fish tb ,after getting them to google it they still wernt convinced it exisited ,then they went off to see a different doctor for advice who has decided to send me to a dermatologist ? they said they could do tests if they need to as they might no more about it.
they also refused to give me any antibiotics as they said they dont like prescribing them, and that my problems with my ears, throat, mouth, lumps, bumps, sores etc are puzzling them so a dermatologist may hold the key .

so now gota wait for referal to go through before i explain all to dermatologist,

hopefully it will all clear up before and im worrying for nothing ,

but as my fishes are now not doing too well it is scarey.

guess it acts as a word of caution not to start syphoning tank with your mouth. cant believe it was my lfs who actually told me to do it as she does it all the while .
