Unfriendly Fish

don't think the tank is over stocked, but thanks.

i'll keep an eye on the shark, see what happens.

A tank doesn't need to be overstocked; all you need is the wrong kind of fish in there. If you've been getting advice from your LFS, I'd go elsewhere.

Wolfs hit the nail on the head, forget the redtail shark, these are pretty much only aggressive to similar looking fish and will ignor small fish like tetras BUT the black ghost knife fish is a nocturnal predator of smaller fish and is also an expert eye remover.

Take out the BGK and return it to the store and your problems will be solved.

Thats easily the most funny but true description of a Black Ghost Knife Expert eye remover Lol... Also if the BGK is small then i'd say it merely got the eyes and the disappearing fish died from being bullied by the shark and eaten by the rest however depending on the size of the BGK it could be the culprit of it all... and should be in a tank any smaller than 60-70 Gallons in my reading

If you don't think it's overstocked, can you then tell us how many gallons the tank is or litres.
why do you need to know? i've seen what you all do to other members who ask for help. you ask for the tank size and instantly put it down to over stocking. in this case, it's definitely not over stocked, i'm not that much of a beginner. it could still take a few more fish.

don't think the tank is over stocked, but thanks.

Don't you just love people like this?
what's that supposed to mean? idiot...

wolf, you saying it's the knife fish? i've been thinking that all along. he's the only one who's eating the dead fish, too.

when i bought the shark, before i could purchase it, i was asked if i had any other sharks in my tank. answer no. fish bought.

when i got the knife fish, i asked the shop about them, explained what i had in my tank, and the dude had no idea, had to go phone a fellow employee to find out. said he was a frogs and newt man  the answer came back that it would be fine with these fish.
i do believe now, that we've been misinformed about the knife fish.

i've sat for ages and watched them, the shark sticks to the bottom of the tank, the guppies at the top, so i'm not sure how it fits in that he's the problem here. my dad also thinks it's nothing to do with him. never mind, nearly every one else here seems to think he's the culprit, so he must be...

mostly the knife fish hides until night time. however, he has been out and about when the dead fish have appeared. this makes me think it's him.
we've set up a new tank, and will be moving the knife fish to it shortly, see if he really is the problem...

edit: didn't realise there was a second page here. the fish with the missing eyes are actually still living!! noticed this morning that one now has had it's remaining eye removed. poor thing. it's still swimming about as normal tho, hehe

the knife fish is only 4-5 inches long atm. the new tank should be ready in a couple of days, for him.

Everybody seems to think its the shark, and ignoring the catfish. Spotted catfish could be a bad desription for our infamous friend CAE which sometimes looks like it has spots down it's side, and we all know it like eyeballs.

I'd guess very overstocked tank though seeing as the OP doesn't want to disclose tank size.

looking through OP's previous posts i believe the tank is 84l so aprox 22 us gallons.

Yea definitely not the rtbs, imo. They don't do that to other fishes eyes. I don't know enough about knife fish so couldn't elaborate more in my post than to give my suggestion that it may not be good to keep in a tank less then 55g. :)

How ironic YOU should call me an idiot!

I'll give you extra credit though for realizing your mistake with the knife fish.

As mentioned, it's the mix of fish that is of concern, not the quantity, but seeing as how you find humorous the fact that your fish are getting their eyeballs ripped out -hehe- there's really nowhere else to go with this.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to pulling the wings off houseflies and burning ants with a magnifying glass.

it would be a great help to not only us that are trying to help you but also your fish if you tell us your tanks size, if you are overstocked you will need to sort them problem and we need to know if it is an appropriate size for the fish you are keeping in there.

so please just tell us your tanks size

I agree with this, you guys had me worried that my rtbs might start ripping out eyes. if the OP has just bought a RTBS surely it's not big or agressive enough to de-eye a fish. I mistakenly ahd more than 1 RTBS when I first started and they fought almost constantly but never more than a ripped fin in damage. This makes me think its the ghost. I know the guy sounds like he knows nothing but at least he's asking for help.

Geez kinda harsh...........

Why dont you make it easy for us and give us the tank size? If you dont want to then I suggest you dont logg back on if you arent going to take advice and try to help your fish!

Hey people... chill out. I can understand why some don't want to enclose some info b/c when they do, people jump down their necks and make them feel terrible for making mistakes.
Why do you think you keep getting people who go on the defensive and ignore the advice given. It's b/c of idiotic harsh posts that try to make them feel stupid.

Ignoring some of the rude comments, you've been given alot of really great info and advice. Hope your fish are gonna be alright!
