if thats what you think, fine!

im going to attempt a guppy/swordtail hybrid
using a male sword and a female guppy

so there!!!!

i'm going to place another post about my plan later.

Good luck mate- hope it works out- i dont want to hijack the thread but was wondering how fish actually reproduce?- i take it they cant do it like we can?- i know it sounds dumb but i am curious

the male deposits sperm on to the females area like humans do, thats live bearers anyway, but egg layers spray their eggs whilst the male fertilises them

anyway this experiment will involve a nearly sexually mature female, which i will raise till it is mature, so i know it is a virgin and then drop it in my community tank and have my male swordtail mate with her. if she gets pregnant it will be a great undertaking in livebearer history after which i will sell most of the fry to my LFS, which i should gets some cash for as they have never been created before.

have you taken this into consideration?

the females can hold sperm for 6 months after intercourse. and there have also been studies to suggest that they can have sperm passed on by the mother, so to make this a fair test you would have to quarantine her on her own for 8 months

sorry to burst your bubble mate but do you not think this has been tried by millions before? do you know how many fish breeders there are in the world that have not thought or tried this? and yet there are no reports of successful crosses? why you ask? because it is not possible
guppy/molly - yes
swordtail/platy - yes

guppy/platy - no
swordtail/molly - no!

i think you would be better off trying to breed some nicely coloured guppys or platys......
