I have to agree with CFC.. The level effort involved in maintaining the Juwel filter in comparison to my eheim external cannister is huge, and with results that just do not compare. Since changing it over I have rock solid stats, crystal clear water, and happy fish. Surely thats what it's about. The heater is a pain in the butt to adjust, and the lighting is just poor. It wouldn't be so bad if they even fitted it with decent tubes in the first place.

They get stripped down because the filters are crap and are unsightly inside the tank. The lighting is crap and is built into a sealed section of the hood which also makes it a sod to modify. At the end of the day they are aimed at the beginner and this is what you get... it's not bad, but I would not go so far as to say its good too.

Ok, point taken. :drinks:

Why are they stripped down?

They get stripped down because the filters cannot cope with the bio load the type of fish i keep create and the lighting units have failed anyway, as juwels always do, my rio 300 was on its third lighting bar before i replaced the lid with a sheet of perspex cut to size.

I have had two jewel tanks a vision and a rio, the filters are pants, the power head was for ever breaking and the lights were dull, so as said before they were stripped bare and the mechanics replaced.

Aside from the working parts their tanks do look nice, but there are better ones out there.

what's a carbon foot print? anyway it's not cheap here either but as eddie izzard says "i grew up in europe, where the history comes from" i'm jealous of that
[/quote]

A carbon footprint is basically a way of measuring how each individual is destroying the planet by travelling to work by car/bus and washing our laundery at a higher temperature and having baths and heating fish tanks. They even have questionaires flying around which then when filled in criticise you for ridiculours things like having a dishwasher not cycling to work and suggesting we get rid of all of the luxuries...

I'm quite lucky as i got my tank second hand, £50 ($100) for a rena (120cm x 70.5 x 40.5). It came with filter, heater, gravel, fish, the whole works. But, the prices are quite high.

It's just like everything in this country. Petrol makes me sick though £1.03 per litre at my local tesco.

My rio is fine for what I have in it. I totally agree, it would be crap for big fish. The lighting however, I've never had a problem in six years other than having to replace a bulb/lightstrip every year.
I want a bigger tank, and the rio 400 might have to be the one. Because the colour, black trim would suit my room. I'd love a rena tank, but the trim, with the gray between the wood effect is nasty.
Whichever I go for in the end I will hae to get an external filter for ease of use.

It pretty much works that whatever they are charging in dollars in the US, we are charging over here in pounds. So if a DVD is $10 in America, it will be £10 here, so pretty much it's double the price over here.

So the wages may be slightly lower, but the cost of living is hugely lower, I could do my weekly shopping and buy good quality food for $100. I can spend that in ASDA here (Walmart) and get some really average food - and, I might add, none of the good American foods, no Kraft mac&cheese. Criminal.

Never bought a fish or a fish tank from America so I can't comment on that.

Good comparison to make food.

When we entertain American business guests here in the the UK and put them up in a hotel the response is always, always the same...

They just cannot believe the quality of our food in conjuction with the disgusting prices.
They just cannot believe the sub standard service and the general rudeness of our society.
And they just cannot get their heads around the price of 'gas'.

To be honest, it's embarrasing to admit how much money we have to pay for such on-going crap.

Always makes me wonder why we all just don't do as the French / Spanish / American / etc. & riot: Make it obvious that things the level of taxation is just not good enough. ... anyway all this talk is making me feel like  so I'm going to have to wind my neck back in and grab a beer.... (31% taxed beer ARRRGH - can't drive down there because of the 80% tax ARRRRGH).

Loading shot gun now..... :X

Oooh, watch those "Yank" comments, the Southerners do *not* like that at all. uh-uh, not at all.

Youre all yanks to us :p

 that may be but there are people here who would have words with you for calling them that. like, anyone not from the northeast or anyone who hates the Yankees baseball team

out of curiosity...do you guys have a minimum wage over there?

yes we have minimum wage - recently introduced a couple(?) of years ago. Now we are inundated with foriegn workers.
