Tridacna Maxima Clam

Lynden

Have been told mixed things about thier location as the derasa's seem to be either embeded in a natural hollow/crevice or in the sand bed, being that my lighting (2 x 39w 34in t5 with arcadia reflectors and 2 x t8 blue) will prob do it no favours at the bottom of my tank (approx 16 inches from the surface) i placed it high up on the rock.

this is just but one site that says this

Didn't know that, have always thought them to be sand-dwellers. I agree with Ski, if the clam doesn't like the place, it will probably do something about it. Either way, should be fine.

Thanks once agin for the info, seeing that the calm decided it didnt like the rockwork i'm even more convinced that it should stay on the substrate, currently it closes up at night and re-opens slightly when my blue lights go on and then fully when the white t5's go on, but will continue to monitor and feed it, one last thing I was going to ask was that unless its persistantly irritated by fish swimming over it blocking light or my blue leg hermit tried to mount it :hyper: it doesnt close tight is this cause for concern? dont get me wrong it closes most of the way all bar a few mm

As long as it closes up at night and doesn't pinch its mantle in the process, you're ok. You'll know if it's in serious trouble as it will really gape. A few mm is no big deal, but a few cm is when there's a problem ;)

it seems to noticeably close at night with mantle retracted then really open again in the day, so far so good! (hope im not speaking to soon)

Sounds like you are taking the right steps.

Remember, even the so called experts in this field are working with lots of collective anecdotal information. Its much more important that funding go to killing machines than understanding the delicate web of life!
In the final analysis you need to watch your animals. As the folks here have said, "it will "tell' you when its not happy.

well i'm happy to say all still seems fine mantle still really comes out once lights are on and it closes pretty quickly if either hermit or sally light foot crab gets on it, and it closes well at night, am currently feeding everyday which is helping the rest of my tank anyway, so something must be right :)
