seriously??? are you actually trying to look silly?

im not trying to prove anything here, the film in question does that already.

i strongly suggest you actually go and watch it, then come back with some proper arguments or points.

the tests are done in the film, the back history is explained with news clips and reports from families affected.

Japanese school children are given school dinners by the japanese government.
The Japanese government uses dolphin meat in the lunches.
Dolphin meat is high in mercury.
High levels of mercury cause serious health problems in humans, especially unborn babies.
in the late 50s i believe, there was a huge epidemic which was called Minimata Disease.

All the above are FACTS!! seriously, go and look it up before posting another reply

and also, what exactly do you class as a reliable source? a deaf, mute blind japanese child and his parents? or one of the many other families affected by this horrible slaughtering?

I am trying to look silly? Coming from someone who doesn't use any grammer, punctuation or capitalisation? Well that has certainly amused me.

All I am asking for is a simple back up to your passionate, albeit naive and superficial, information.

A quick google of "japan dolphin school lunches" shows the first return of "Japan stopped using Dolphin meat in school lunches in 2009." Nothing showed that kids are still being force fed the meat.

I understand that cute animals being killed may distress you and make you unhappy, and yes, it is not a good thing. But when you use made up and outdated information for some of your assertions, then it makes one question them all.

I see no difference between this and eating pigs? Pigs are "intelligent, self-aware mammals with bonded social interactions".

I still agree with the comment from the guardian ""I think we are the victims of a form of racism," said one, as we watched the pilot whales being herded out of sight to be killed. "Westerners slaughter cattle and other animals in the most inhumane ways imaginable, but no one says a word. Why is it that only Japan gets this kind of treatment?"

and my PETA reference was clearly a suggestion to extreme animal rights people, blowing things up and making them attacks on cultures.

oh dear.

the film came out in 2009. the information in the film was accurate at release.
a lot of things have been achieved since the release of the film, so yes, some info is outdated.

if you havent seen the film, im sorry but you cannot comment as the whole point of the film is to expose what the media and Japanese government are hiding.

and as for grammar, punctuation and capitalisation....its the internet.
i have other things to do with my days than come on here and try to show some moron how to use google, or even watch a film.

so, to clarify the situation..

Dolphin slaughtering still goes on, dolphin meat still gets sold as whale and other foods. people still get sick from it.

stop trying to make yourself look smart, and actually focus on the issue and topic at hand here.

THE DOLPHINS!

i would like to know if you have seen the film, or if you knew about this before the OP started this topic?
im betting you didnt.

the proof you ask for is the film. what other proof do you need? would it help you if i told you Hayden Pannetierre went to Taiji to protest against this and is now permanently banned from entering there ever again, the same as anyone else caught by "private space" the chief of police inm Taiji.

dont bother replying until youve either a) seen the film or b) got over your inferiority complex and come to terms with the fact that in this case, you know nothing.

im gonna go out on a limb here and guess you havent seen the film either.
its not the fact they are using dolphins for food, its the fact they are slaughtering them in a disgusting and cruel way.
the film shows that the majority of Japanese citizens, all over Japan, are blissfully unaware that dolphin meat is even offered for food.

there are plenty of other causes to follow too, like you say, other animals are being slaughtered in cruel ways.
but, the dolphin slaughters are different.
if the japanese people arent eating dolphin, then why are they killing them?
the film gives some arguments that dolphins are eating too much fish and therefore should be culled as a population control.
but, this isnt true and has never been proved.

i know that this will never be solved, like many other sick things in this world.
but at least im willing to stick my neck out and make a point of it, rather than push it to the side and dismiss it with stupid arguments or stupid comments like "oh thats just speculation" and "cows get slaughtered for food"

if you havent seen the film, you dont know the full story, so you cannot comment.

They are clearly doing it for money. Im sorry but we as human beings are willing to blow eachout apart for the same thing. If you are that worried about animals, go and donate some money to dancing bears, or voulenteer at your local animnal shelter. Being rude, arrogant and condescending on the internet hardly helps your cause.

Really? All the proof you ever need is in that documentary (which I have seen by the way) and you accept all the facts and assertions without question?

I have seen many documentaries, and they often have bias that you need to be aware of. Seriously, I know you are upset by this, but it is important not to get defensive and insulting because people question the facts. Rather lay your emotion to the side and engage your critical facilities and address the situation.

And if the important thing is "THE DOLPHINS!" as you so elequontly put it then you may be better focused on larger issues such as tuna nets.

But then again, it's always easier to go "evil savage foreigners" that actually do research and critical thinking.

Oh, and just because it is the interent doesn't mean you can write like an illiterate and not have someone comment on it.

how have you gone from a topic about a film to attempting to have an argument?

seriously, its people like you who make these causes pointless.

you have succeeded in pissing me off, but not because your trying to make me angry, but because i posted this info so people understood what was going on.
not so some jumped up little #118#### can come on here and start a row.

you say youve seen the film? i call bull#105###. if you had seen it youd have know the facts and wouldnt need to ask for proof.

go do something rewarding for a change instead of trolling topics you know nothing about

imo i have addressed the problems, but you go off on a tangent about tuna nets etc.
yes they kill dolphins, but they dont stab them with sharp sticks and then cut them up just because they can!
#92###, you are deluded.

the whole point of this topic was to educate people about what is happening to these dolhins in this one cove in Taiji. not to start a slagging match about all other cruel animal slaughterings.
I feel strongly about animal welfare, as do a lot of people here. so why did you feel it necessary to get involved? why not just post some of your own facts or links to reavent info?

Actually I fully support many causes, I just like to find out what I am supporting rather than blindly following something someone told me about.

And I am not having a row, I just wanted to make sure that when people find out what is going on they know the full story, not just the newsworthy snippets. I dislike when people support things like this because they think that schoolchildren are being forcefed dolphin meat, whereas that no longer exists.

There are also many officials in Japan such as Kii Katsuura that are actively campaigning for these causes, so to make blanket statements like people in Japan are unaware they are eating dolphin is innaccurate.

So ignoring the extraneous and outdated information we can concentrate on the actual issues such as the dolphin killing without having to lie or exagreate to get the point across.

I am sorry if you are angry, but people can debate without name calling and insults and can deal with the facts alone. When you have had a chance to calm down I hope we can continue this discussion in a mature manner.

i was trying to be mature!

right, i apologise for my outburst, but like i said this is something i have strong opinions of. moreso than probably anything else in life.

yes, things have changed since the film was released and the death and slaughter was brought to peoples attention. BUT, to say that school kids no longer eat dolphin isnt something you can back up or prove.

back in the 50s it was happening but wasnt common knowledge.
also, in the film, they do go and interview people about dolphin meat for sale, and they are unaware. Of course im not stupid enough to think that everybody in japan knows nothing of dolphin meat being sold.

the most ironic part of it all is that Taiji is a place where if you visit you will see dolphins everywhere. Signs, displays, models etc. yet, in that one isolated cove they kill thousands upon thousands of dolphins every year.

i understand your points, but i dont agree with them.
obviously this film is made to show off the slaughter and to shock people. but the fact remains that this is still going on.
they might be killing them more "humanely" but they still havent 100% clarified why they are doing it if its not for food!

surely you see that point?

What shocked me most was when the people in Japan found out about it, most were shocked and disgusted, that right there shows how many people detest. They are killing them for no reason really, and that is wrong. What if they kill them all and they go extinct, there is the World wildlife fund that aims to keep ALL animals from extinction. Your not talking about mass produced livestock, but a Wild population. Even in the U.S. there are hunting laws and limits to follow, and a hunting/gun license required. You break the law you face jail or a hefty fine.

Animals if killed for food should be killed quickly with least amount of suffering.

Hi keithp :)

I think this topic might be more appropriate in the General Chat section. I'll move it there.

I agree with some people here about keep your noses out of the countries business. Dolphin is food for the Japanese, you don't see campaigns to stop the killing of millions upon millions of Salmon etc.

ok, would you like to back this up with any valid proof?
i want to see proof that dolphin is a widely stocked and known about japanese food.

cos, im sorry, but it really isnt
